Israeli President Herzog: A Man For All Seasons?!?

by Rich Scheck

I watched the classic film, A Man For All Seasons, for the first time in over 60 years
at the local library yesterday.

It is a powerful account of Sir Thomas More’s resistance to the autocratic exercise of
abusive authority by the British Monarchy led by Henry VIII. It involved an issue of personal conscience: More’s objection to the King divorcing his wife during a time of Papal rule in the United Kingdom.

Fast forward to modern America and we are witnessing similar Profiles in Courage by some MAGA stalwarts like Thomas Massie, MTG and Tucker Carlson who are experiencing the wrath of President Trump for voicing their objections to certain of his decisions they believe are inconsistent with his campaign promises.

We see a parallel development unfolding in Israel where Trump has urged President Herzog to pardon Prime Minister Netanyahu in an act of interference with the internal affairs of another country that has sparked criticism across the political spectrum.

Herzog has so far resisted the pressure to please this assertion of “royal prerogative” by the
imperious American leader who struts the globe more like a New World Order tyrant than as the head of a sovereign state.

But as we saw clearly in the Academy Award drama, Kings have a way of prevailing against
those who resist them even when their actions are unlawful, self-serving and morally suspect.

Massie, MTG, Tucker and others remain stalwart in the face of growing threats by Bibi who is promising to “neutralize American dissent” for their perceived anti-semitic stance.

It will be interesting to see if Herzog is smeared with a similar label for saying NO to these
authoritarian pretenders, Trump and Bibi, however incongruous it may be to call him that.

Will Herzog become a Jewish Man For All Seasons? Will he be able to survive either politically or literally considering Bibi’s brutal nature who some ascribe responsibility for Rabin’s murder?

It remains to be seen….but be not naive: many who rule show little reluctance to act harshly on their own behalf even if it violates the rule of law and the moral pronouncements of their own country they proclaim as a haven of righteousness.

Beheading More in 1535 made him a martyr and an example of speaking truth to power. He nobly accepted his fate to the dismay of his beloved family.

The question remains: will Herzog and these others do the same?
