Many imported doctors and nurses could barely speak English, and some hadn’t even completed their degrees or received practical training. Standards were entirely abandoned to let anyone onto the floor.

Homeland Security footed the bill, paying roving nurses astronomical salaries of $10,000 a week, regardless of whether they actually worked.

“And so when these doctors come from India or Pakistan or wherever they’re coming from, they may even think, ‘Oh, this is good medicine. This is the right way to do things.’ But the main thing is they don’t have a dog in the fight. They’re not American citizens. They’re going to go back to India or Pakistan at some point with a big pile of money”
