JAKARTA – The Deputy Chairman of the French National Assembly, Clemence Guette, from the left-wing party La France Insoumise, said he had submitted a resolution calling for France to withdraw from NATO.

“The issue of France’s participation in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a military alliance led by the US and serving its interests, is more urgent than ever. I am proposing a resolution to plan France’s exit from NATO,” Guette said on X on Thursday.

The lawmaker criticized the US actions against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, as well as Washington’s plan to incorporate Greenland into the US. He also denounced US support for Israel during the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

On January 3, the US launched a massive attack on Venezuela, arresting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and bringing them to New York.

US President Donald Trump announced that Maduro and Flores would be tried for allegedly being involved in “narcoterrorism” and posing a threat, including to the US.

Caracas has called for an emergency meeting of the UN over the US operation. Meanwhile, Venezuela’s Supreme Court temporarily transferred the duties of the head of state to Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, who was officially inaugurated as interim president before the National Assembly on January 5.

Trump has also repeatedly said Greenland should be part of the US, citing its strategic importance to the national security and defense of the “free world,” including from China and Russia.

Greenland’s former Prime Minister, Mute Egede, said the island was not for sale.

On January 4, Katie Miller, wife of White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, posted an image on X showing a map of Greenland colored with the US flag, with the caption “URGENT.”

In response, Denmark’s ambassador to the US, Jesper Moller Sorensen, said Copenhagen expects respect for the kingdom’s territorial integrity. Nielsen called the image disrespectful.

In December, Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland. Landry reiterated the US’s goal of making the island part of the US.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said he was surprised by Landry’s statement.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen warned the US against any takeover, and demanded respect for their shared territorial integrity.

Greenland was a Danish colony until 1953. The island remained part of the Kingdom of Denmark after gaining autonomy in 2009, with the ability to govern itself and determine policy in its own country.
