Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their Brentwood, Los Angeles, home on Sunday, December 14. In the months leading up to his passing, Reiner gave what is now considered one of his final interviews, warning that “This may be the last time you ever see me.”

The 78-year-old sat down with CNN to share his thoughts on the entertainment industry, free speech and his own professional future.

During the interview, Reiner weighed in on ABC’s September suspension of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, calling it an example of “authoritarian” overreach in the media under Donald Trump’s administration.

While speaking with CNN anchor Brianna Keilar, Reiner expressed concern that mounting pressure on journalists and entertainers could have lasting implications.

“Control the media, control the message. Make sure that only what we have to say and only what we believe will get out to the public,” Reiner said, pointing to the Trump administration.

“That goes and flies 180 degrees against the First Amendment of the Constitution.”

At the time, Kimmel had been indefinitely suspended from Jimmy Kimmel Live following controversial remarks about the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Several affiliate networks temporarily pulled the show, prompting ABC and Disney to pause production in what the network described as an effort to “take the temperature down.”

The suspension went on for several days, prompting a wave of criticism across Hollywood. Many in the industry, including Reiner, voiced their support for free speech and artistic freedom.

In a heartfelt commentary on government control of the media, Reiner said the country is experiencing “1A [play out] in the authoritarian playbook.”

According to Reiner, Trump was trying to “destroy the Constitution” and controlling what media professionals could publicly say.

“It can’t happen,” Reiner continued. “If it does happen…you’re not going to be having this program. You’re not going to be having someone like me on to talk.”

“It will be state-run media, and that is the basis for authoritarian rule,” he added.

As the interview wrapped up, Reiner left viewers with a closing remark that now feels especially chilling.

“By the way, this may be the last time you ever see me.”

Less than four months later, Reiner and his wife were found dead. The couple had been married for 35 years and were longtime fixtures in the entertainment community.

Reiner, the son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, was best known for directing beloved films such as When Harry Met Sally…, The Princess BrideStand by Me and A Few Good Men, while also earning acclaim for his acting role on All in the Family.

They are survived by four children: sons Jake Reiner and Nick Reiner, daughter Romy Reiner, and Reiner’s daughter Tracy Reiner, whom he shared with late ex-wife Penny Marshall.

TMZ reports that Nick, 32, was taken into custody by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on Monday morning, according to online records. Authorities have not announced immediate charges or released further details.
