US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has censured President Donald Trump for pushing the United States toward a “foreign war” with Venezuela.
Schumer warned Trump on Saturday about his hostile posture against Venezuela, saying that he is edging the United States “closer and closer to another costly foreign war” without congressional approval.
He rebuked Trump over the recent escalation towards Venezuela and argued that the president had upended the country’s constitution.
“President Trump’s reckless actions towards Venezuela are pushing America closer and closer to another costly foreign war,” Schumer stated. “Under our Constitution, Congress has the sole power to declare war — not the President — and Congress has not authorized the use of military force against Venezuela.”
The minority leader cautioned the US president against perpetual war, saying Americans were “tired of endless foreign wars.”
“Americans are tired of endless foreign wars that cost the lives of countless American service members and drain precious resources,” Schumer said.
“This is not an America First policy,” he added.
The Democratic Senator from New York called for bipartisan pushback by lawmakers in Congress, urging other Congressmen from both sides of the aisle to “come together to return the power to declare war back to the people.”
Schumer’s strong criticism of Trump came after the US president wrote on his Truth Social platform that Venezuela’s airspace should be considered “closed in its entirety.”
