• Sinking of the RMS Titanic (1912): The legendary British ocean liner struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage and sank in the North Atlantic, resulting in the deaths of more than 1,500 people and transforming maritime safety regulations.

• Sixteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution & Income Tax (1913): The Sixteenth Amendment (Amendment XVI) to the United States Constitution allows Congress to levy an income tax without apportioning it among the states on the basis of population. Shortly after the amendment was ratified, Congress imposed a federal income tax with the Revenue Act of 1913. 

• U.S. Federal Reserve System (1913): The Federal Reserve Act was passed by the 63rd United States Congress and signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson on December 23, 1913. The law created the Federal Reserve System, the central banking system of the United States and the devastating paradigm fiat money which put the fractional reserve banking on steroids.

• The Severe Recession of 1914 (1914): British and European investors desperately needed cash for the war effort and began a massive sell-off of roughly $3 billion in U.S. stocks. To prevent a total market collapse, the New York Stock Exchange was forced to shut down entirely for four months (from late July to late November 1914).

• World War I Begins (1914): The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand triggered a catastrophic global war across Europe and beyond, involving major world powers and introducing industrialized trench warfare. 

• Sinking of the RMS Lusitania (1915): A German U-boat torpedoed the British ocean liner off the coast of Ireland, killing nearly 1,200 civilians and deeply shifting American and international public opinion against Germany.

• The Armenian Genocide (1915): The Ottoman Empire began the systematic mass deportation and extermination of an estimated 1.5 million ethnic Armenians during World War I. 

• Bolshevik Revolution followed by Russian Civil War (1917): Widespread exhaustion from World War I led to the collapse of the Russian monarchy in the February Revolution, followed by Vladimir Lenin and the Bolsheviks seizing power in the October Revolution, creating the world’s first communist state.

• United States enters World War I (1917): Driven by unrestricted submarine warfare and the interception of the Zimmermann Telegram, the U.S. formally entered the conflict, turning the tide of the war in favor of the Allied forces.

• 1918 Influenza Pandemic (1918–1919): An unusually deadly global outbreak of the H1N1 influenza virus infected a third of the world’s population and killed an estimated 20 to 50 million people globally, concluding just as the Treaty of Versailles officially ended World War I in 1919. 

• The Armistice (1918): On November 11, 1918, Germany signed an armistice agreement with the Allies, ending the fighting on the Western Front. 
• Paris Peace Conference & Treaty of Versailles (1919): World leaders gathered to negotiate peace terms, drastically redrawing the map of Europe and establishing the League of Nations. The sheer injustice of the Treaty of Versailles toward Germany has long been considered one of the primary causes for World War II.
