The phrase “Fourth Turning” comes from the 1997 book The Fourth Turning by William Strauss and Neil Howe. It describes a repeating 75-to-85-year cycle in modern history and particularly with regard to the development and evolution of the American Republic. Each cycle has four 20-year eras called “turnings”: a High, an Awakening, an Unraveling, and a Crisis (aka the Fourth Turning)
The Four Eras
- First Turning (The High): A bright time after a crisis. Society feels strong and works together. Old values fade away.
- Second Turning (The Awakening): A time of spiritual change. People rebel against the established rules.
- Third Turning (The Unraveling): Institutions grow weak. People care more about themselves than the group.
- Fourth Turning (The Crisis): A dangerous era of deep upheaval. Old systems break down completely. Society is forced to rebuild a new civic order

But why will the current 4th Fourth Turning dwarf the previous three?
Because, the American people fatefully failed to get its house in order on so many levels and in so many ways. For example, the nation consistently neglected to deal with its overwhelming financial problems (e.g $40 Trillion National Debt), as well as most formidable social challenges and seemingly insurmountable political obstacles and ever-corrosive governmental corruption and on and on and on … since the end of World War II.
And because of how much more complicated life is today in every sphere of life, and how they interpenetrate each other as never before, the potential for an unparalleled systemic breakdown in one sphere will inevitably and severely impact all of the others.

If there is one defining moment that will see this 4th Fourth Turning put on super steroids throughout these once United States of America, it is the coming 2026 midterm elections.
In point of fact, there is so much riding on the many outcomes of this electoral cycle that both sides of America’s political counterfeit coin will do whatever it takes to prevent their political extinction.
