Donald Trump has sparked fresh concerns for his cognitive health after being sent into a full-blown meltdown by an anti-tariff advert.
The president abruptly terminated all trade negotiations with Canada on Thursday in a spectacular tantrum over a $75 million ad campaign launched by the Ontario government earlier this month. The video, which aired on major networks in the US, featured audio of former US President Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs.
Reagan, a conservative icon, could be heard warning that tariffs “hurt every American worker and consumer.” Trump hit back at the advert via his Truth Social account, branding it “FAKE” and “egregious”.

“The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about Tariffs. The ad was for $75,000,000. They only did this to interfere with the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court, and other courts,” the president raged.
The advert featured real excerpts from a 1987 radio address by Reagan. Trump continued ranting: “TARIFFS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY, AND ECONOMY, OF THE U.S.A. Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DJT.”
The Republicans Against Trump account on X branded the 79-year-old president’s actions “deranged” but others accused the president of showing signs of cognitive decline via his actions.
“Empirical evidence of dementia,” one person commented. A second wrote: “Dementia Don should be sleeping not tweeting!”
A third added: “I’d go with delusional. He lives in a different world than the rest of us.” A fourth said: “He is totally unhinged now. He gets a Whiff someone is speaking up against his damaging America tariffs – he goes ape s—. He is not of sound mind.”
Another commented: “It’s pathetic how many MAGA people are STILL defending Trump! Can’t you see that he has dementia? He doesn’t care about YOU. He only cares about himself. Thank Canada for standing up to his insanity!”
Some called for Trump to be removed from office. “The 25th Amendment is looking better with each passing day,” one noted.
“He needs to be institutionalized,” a second declared. Another wrote: “We are being governed by a madman. Ronald Reagan DID speak harshly of the inappropriate use of tariffs. Today he’s suspending talks on social media. In three days he will completely reverse himself. Yes, deranged.”
Others accused Trump of acting like a toddler. “We’re being governed by a petulant toddler trump is a baby or whoever is running the country is making trump look like a baby,” one said. Another wrote: “Toddler in chief got his feelings hurt. Wahhhh.”
In the advert, Reagan is heard saying: “When someone says, ‘Let’s impose tariffs on foreign imports,’ it looks like they’re doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs. And sometimes for a short while it works, but only for a short time.”
He continues: “But over the long run, such trade barriers hurt every American worker and consumer. High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars. Then the worst happens. Markets shrink and collapse. Businesses and industries shut down and millions of people lose their jobs.
“Throughout the world, there’s a growing realization that the way to prosperity for all nations is rejecting protectionist legislation and promoting fair and free competition. America’s jobs and growth are at stake.”
Earlier on Thursday, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation + Institute released a statement on X claiming that the government of Ontario had used “selective” audio and video of Reagan which they alleged “misrepresents the ‘Presidential Radio Address to the Nation on Free and Fair Trade’ dated April 25, 1987.”
They said that Ontario did not receive foundation permission “to use and edit the remarks” and stated that they are reviewing legal option.
The Trump administration has introduced a 35% levy on a wide range of Canadian imports. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held talks with the president earlier this month to try and reach a better deal.
Trump’s sudden termination of trade talks is likely to have taken Carney by surprise. Just hours before Trump’s announcement, he’d challenged Trump to a friendly bet on who would win the baseball world series between the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers.
