In his response, Makarem Shirazi described these individuals as muhārib, meaning “enemies of God,” a grave designation in Islamic law that justifies violent retaliation.
“Any person or regime that threatens the Supreme Leader or religious authority must be considered an enemy of God. It is the duty of all Muslims to make them repent for their actions. If they suffer any harm during that effort, they will receive the reward of martyrs in the path of God,” states the text published in Iranian media.
This decision could escalate tensions in the Middle East and directly affect relations between Iran and the United States, following the bombing campaign and the destruction of Iran’s nuclear program. It could also encourage actions by Islamic terrorist groups that interpret the fatwa as a direct order to act.
Unlike other religious figures, Makarem Shirazi has millions of followers both inside and outside Iran, which increases international concern.
In recent weeks, Israel has carried out strategic attacks inside Iran, eliminating numerous high-ranking military officials and nuclear scientists, as well as key nuclear facilities of the Islamic regime. Meanwhile, the United States conducted an impressive bombing that completely destroyed Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
In response to the Israeli attacks, Iran launched missiles against Israel’s main cities, directly targeting the civilian population.
