For months, Vice President JD Vance had publicly defended the president\u2019s war with Iran, even as he privately opposed it. Vance routinely explained it as something President Donald Trump felt was necessary, and a conflict that would not drag on indefinitely.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On Wednesday, after Republicans suffered a stunning defeat at the ballot box, Vance didn\u2019t mince words about what caused the shellacking.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThe reason we lost is the war,\u201d Vance said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In a lengthy social media post<\/a>, Vance, who is considering a presidential run<\/a>, acknowledged the failures of some of the administration\u2019s policies, a sharp contrast with Trump\u2019s reaction. His response to the election results, which surprised and irked some of Trump\u2019s advisers, signaled an awareness of the deep distrust among voters who put him and Trump in office \u2014 and whose support he will need should he choose to run in 2028.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

While <\/b>Trump and his top White House advisers blamed Republican candidates and tried to wash their hands of any responsibility for the GOP\u2019s massive losses, Vance pinned the blame on the administration\u2019s decisions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Vance said that while mixed data had given the White House some hope of avoiding the worst going into Election Day, a trusted pollster had warned him earlier Tuesday that \u201ca lot of Trump 2024 voters were angry and planning to vote for Democrats.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Those voters wanted Trump to end the war, focus on the cost of living and inflation, put America first and \u201cchange our relationship to Israel,\u201d Vance <\/b>wrote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cOur voters showed up,\u201d Vance wrote. \u201cAnd the above four reasons are why many of them voted for Democrats.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Asked Wednesday about Vance\u2019s 600-word postmortem analysis of Republicans\u2019 losses, Trump said he has long known \u201chow he feels about it,\u201d but the president did not directly answer whether Vance had told ahead of time about his plans to make the post.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

A White House official told The Washington Post that Trump had been briefed on the statement before its release and was comfortable with it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI think it was fine,\u201d Trump said of what Vance wrote. \u201cI thought it was good.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Asked whether he has spoken to Vance about his 2028 ambitions, Trump said he speaks to his vice president \u201cabout a lot of things.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201c<\/i>We\u2019ll see what happens. You don\u2019t know who\u2019s talking about running,\u201d Trump said. \u201cYou can have a lot of people, maybe a lot of people, running. Maybe nobody\u2019s going to run. Maybe he won\u2019t run.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Trump insisted, however, that \u201cas far as that war is concerned, I would have done nothing different.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Donald Trump Jr., Trump\u2019s son and a close friend of Vance, offered his support and reposted the vice president\u2019s statement: \u201cEvery word of this is 100,\u201d Trump Jr. wrote, using an emoji for 100 that signifies full agreement with someone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Vance and Trump Jr. have privately opposed the war in recent months, and Vance, a Marine Corps veteran who served in the Iraq War, had become the face of the administration\u2019s efforts over the summer to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict. In-person talks Vance held with Iranian officials in Pakistan and Switzerland ultimately failed to secure a lasting peace deal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Some MAGA-aligned but anti-war conservatives were quick to praise Vance\u2019s appraisal of the conflict\u2019s cost and suggest a change of course.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThis is maybe the most thorough and honest diagnosis of an election defeat that we\u2019ve ever seen from a politician at Vance\u2019s level,\u201d podcaster Matt Walsh wrote<\/a>. \u201cAnd he\u2019s right.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt\u2019s time to end the Iran war,\u201d Andrew Kolvet, the executive producer of \u201cThe Charlie Kirk Show,\u201d wrote<\/a> in response to Vance, noting that \u201cmany on the right mercilessly attacked the VP\u2019s efforts at peace over the summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
