Canada\u2019s Liberal government is pushing new legislation that would allow the nation\u2019s socialized healthcare system to begin euthanizing members of the public without their consent.<\/p>\n
Campaign Life Coalition condemned Bill C-41<\/a>, introduced Tuesday as the \u201cSafeguards Act,\u201d arguing that its provisions threaten people with dementia while the government promotes a separate prohibition on euthanasia solely for mental illness.<\/p>\n The legislation allows euthanasia through advance requests, prompting warnings that vulnerable patients could receive lethal injections without being told what is happening or giving consent at the time.<\/p>\n Under CLC\u2019s interpretation, a practitioner could proceed on an earlier request after determining that the specified symptoms and suffering are present, without first informing the patient or speaking with them.<\/p>\n If a patient changes their mind or decides they\u2019d prefer to receive care instead of a lethal injection, the doctor could decide to euthanize them anyway, against their will.<\/p>\n \u201cThe killing procedure may proceed solely on the basis of the earlier request, and the practitioner\u2019s assessment that the described symptoms and suffering are present, subject only to a check for what the bill calls \u2018refusal or resistance,\u2019\u201d CLC national president Jeff Gunnarson said.<\/p>\n Critics Blast Trade-Off Between Mental Illness Ban and Dementia Expansion<\/strong><\/p>\n Justice Minister Sean Fraser says the legislation would permanently exclude mental illness as the sole qualifying condition for Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD).<\/p>\n But CLC warns that the advance-request provisions open another route to euthanasia, with practitioners left to assess whether the circumstances specified in an earlier request have arrived.<\/p>\n Gunnarson called the proposal a \u201cslippery slope\u201d and a \u201chorror that is not without historical precedent.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe government is offering protection for those with mental illness at the expense of those with dementia,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s literally trading human lives, and it\u2019s simply immoral.\u201d<\/p>\n The dispute centers on a profound question: what protection remains when a patient can no longer confirm that an earlier request still reflects their wishes?<\/p>\n Family Says Grandmother Begged Against Lethal Injection<\/strong><\/p>\n The proposed expansion comes amid a police investigation<\/a> into the death of 83-year-old Brigitte Stegemann<\/a>, whose family alleges that she was euthanized against her will.<\/p>\n Stegemann received a lethal injection under MAiD on July 10 at The Pearl care home in Cannifton, Ontario.<\/p>\n Her granddaughter and longtime caregiver, Brigitte Kranendonk, says Stegemann was confused, had failed a cognitive assessment, and did not clearly consent on the morning of the procedure.<\/p>\n According to Kranendonk, her grandmother cried and pleaded, \u201cI don\u2019t want the death shot!\u201d<\/p>\n Belleville Police confirmed that investigators are examining the case.<\/p>\n \u201cThis incident is currently open and under investigation with our Criminal Investigations Division,\u201d a police spokesperson said.<\/p>\n The family\u2019s allegations put the enforcement of consent protections under direct scrutiny.<\/p>\n Kenney Condemns Separate Reported Case<\/strong><\/p>\n Earlier this year, former Alberta Premier Jason Kenney also raised the alarm over a separate report involving an elderly woman identified as Mrs. B.<\/p>\n According to reports, Mrs. B was euthanized after explicitly stating that she wanted to live.<\/p>\n Doctors reportedly fast-tracked<\/a> her lethal injection after arguing<\/a> that her elderly husband, who was listed as her main carer, appeared \u201cfed up\u201d with caring for his wife.<\/p>\n Although Mrs. B initially requested euthanasia, she changed her mind when an assessor arrived, as Slay News reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n According to her family, she stated that she \u201cwanted to withdraw her request, citing personal religious values and beliefs.\u201d<\/p>\n She specifically told doctors that she wanted to live and receive inpatient hospice care instead of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD).<\/p>\n That should have ended the process.<\/p>\n However, taxpayer-funded doctors refused to take no for an answer.<\/p>\n The next morning, Mrs. B was taken to the hospital.<\/p>\n Doctors found she was medically stable, but noted her husband was overwhelmed.<\/p>\n Her palliative care doctor applied for urgent inpatient hospice placement.<\/p>\n The request was denied.<\/p>\n That same day, another MAiD assessment was requested after doctors said her husband indicated that euthanasia would relieve the burden<\/p>\n Despite withdrawing consent, Mrs. B was reportedly rushed through what is known as \u201csame-day\u201d euthanasia and given a lethal injection.<\/p>\n Just like Brigette Stegemann, Mrs. B begged not to receive the lethal injection, insisting she wanted to live.<\/p>\n She was killed anyway.<\/p>\n \u201c\u2018Euthanized against her will\u2019 = cold-blooded murder,\u201d Kenney wrote on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is the inevitable result of Canada\u2019s dystopian \u2018assistance in dying\u2019 regime,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n Kenney said warnings about the consequences of expanding euthanasia had been dismissed during earlier parliamentary debates.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen I predicted this outcome over years of debates in Parliament, pro-euthanasia advocates would dismiss it as \u2018fear-mongering,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cIt turns out that fear of desacralizing human life is entirely rational,\u201d Kenney added.<\/p>\n Catholic Leaders Urge Continued Opposition<\/strong><\/p>\n The Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto is urging<\/a> Canadians to press their members of Parliament to oppose further euthanasia expansion.<\/p>\n It warned that \u201cwork must continue\u201d to protect vulnerable people despite the government\u2019s move to exclude mental illness as a sole qualifying condition.<\/p>\n Provincial resistance has also emerged, with Alberta placing limits on assisted suicide and opposing the planned mental-illness expansion.<\/p>\n Bill C-41 now places advance requests at the center of the fight, with critics warning that a measure presented as a safeguard could permit death without a patient\u2019s final, contemporaneous consent.<\/p>\n
