Former Republican Congressman George Santos delivered a blistering assessment of Washington during a new sit-down with Bill Maher<\/a>, claiming that much of what Americans see coming out of Congress is little more than political theater.<\/p>\n

Appearing on Bill Maher\u2019s Club Random<\/em> podcast<\/a>, Santos\u00a0ripped the mask off Congress and called the whole operation what it is: theater. Messaging bills. Backroom deals. Cigars, scotch, and pizza while the American people get treated like sheep.<\/p>\n

Even Maher, who has spent years mocking Santos, sat there taking it in.<\/p>\n

And when Maher gave Santos permission to speak candidly about Washington, Santos did not hold back.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re all full of absolute sh*t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santos then recalled a conversation he said he had with Republican Congressman Ryan Zinke of Montana shortly after arriving in Washington.<\/p>\n

According to Santos, Zinke looked around Washington and told him:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all theater. Just remember this, you have one of the best seats in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santos said the alleged remark shook his perception of Washington.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd, you know, Ryan Zinke was somebody I looked up to as, like, a statesman,\u201d Santos told Maher.<\/p>\n

Santos claimed he soon began seeing what Zinke allegedly meant as one vote after another came before the House.<\/p>\n

\u201cI witnessed it vote after vote,\u201d Santos said.<\/p>\n

According to Santos, members frequently found themselves forced to choose between two undesirable options because voting \u201cpresent\u201d effectively meant surrendering their vote.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou gotta pick a side on an issue. Yes, no,\u201d Santos said. \u201cSo you pick a side, right? The less of the two evils.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then came his most brutal assessment of congressional voting.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I tell you the amount of times that the votes were just bullsh*t messaging bills\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

Maher jumped in: \u201cThat\u2019s what John Fetterman<\/a> says.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santos responded:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all f*cking Kabuki theater.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maher replied, \u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santos then described what he claimed happens after the public fights and partisan warfare on the House floor.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end of the day, it ends in pizza,\u201d Santos said. \u201cDo you know what that means?\u201d<\/p>\n

Maher replied, \u201cYou order pizza?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPretty much,\u201d Santos responded.<\/p>\n

Santos claimed that after lawmakers publicly battle one another, congressional leaders eventually gather privately and hammer out agreements.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody cares because they will end whatever their mishegas is on the floor, go and do their backroom deals,\u201d Santos said.<\/p>\n

He specifically referenced leadership pairings such as Hakeem Jeffries and Mike Johnson, Jeffries and former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi<\/a> and previous Republican leaders.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey get together, they smoke cigars, drink scotch or whatever the f*ck it is that they enjoy,\u201d Santos said.<\/p>\n

According to Santos, leadership then returns to the respective party conferences with the decision already effectively made.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then they ram it down the conference and the caucus\u2019s throat and say, \u2018This is what we\u2019re doing!\u2019\u201d Santos said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd, like, we\u2019re sheep.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santos claimed members generally fall in line with leadership, though some occasionally break ranks.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe go there: \u2018Yes, this is what leadership told us to do,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cEvery now and then you\u2019ll get a rogue. I happen to be one of those rogues who would kind of go against the grain\u2026 Oh, the scolding.\u201d<\/p>\n
