Artificial intelligence is powerful enough to cause a billion deaths if used by people with malicious intent, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates told NBC News\u2019 \u2018Meet the Press\u2019 in an interview on Friday.<\/p>\n

Governments should not rely on tech companies to police themselves, the billionaire stressed, urging Washington to pass legislation regulating AI development.<\/p>\n

\u201cAI is certainly powerful enough to drive events that\u2026 cause a billion deaths,\u201d<\/em> he said. \u201cEven though it\u2019s pretty hard to get to 100%, there\u2019s never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of people of ill intent using the latest AI tools.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Gates\u2019 warning came just days after OpenAI\u2019s Sam Altman and Anthropic\u2019s Dario Amodei renewed calls for stronger government guardrails on the technology following multiple incidents involving AI agents breaking containment in recent months.<\/p>\n

Last month, Gates warned that \u201cAI will either be the greatest equalizer ever invented, or the worst source of injustice.\u201d<\/em> He also argued that the risk of a rogue group using \u201copen source AI tools to design a bioterrorism weapon\u201d<\/em> is greater than that of \u201ca naturally caused pandemic.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
