UK government bans goods from Israeli settlements and accuses settlers of \u2018ethnic cleansing\u2019<\/b><\/h2>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more--><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-79707\" src=\"http:\/\/stateofthenation.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Screenshot-2026-09-08-at-3.04.01-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"633\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Screenshot-2026-09-08-at-3.04.01-PM.png 633w, https:\/\/stateofthenation.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Screenshot-2026-09-08-at-3.04.01-PM-300x170.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 633px) 100vw, 633px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By JILL LAWLESS<br \/>\nUpdated 2:18 PM EDT, September 8, 2026<br \/>\nLeer en espa\u00f1ol<\/p>\n<p>LONDON (AP) \u2014 The United Kingdom on Tuesday banned trade with Israeli settlements in the\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/west-bank\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">occupied West Bank,<\/a><\/span>\u00a0where it says \u201csettler terrorists\u201d are carrying out \u201cethnic cleansing\u201d of Palestinians, in a significant toughening of Britain\u2019s stance toward a longtime ally.<\/p>\n<p>France and Canada announced they would take similar action in an attempt to prevent\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-west-bank-settler-violence-palestinian-qusra-huckabee-aad901d8ee7cf54e5e4952bf61a4f6d1\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">expanding settlements and growing violence<\/a><\/span>\u00a0from making it impossible to establish a future Palestinian state.<\/p>\n<p>Israel responded angrily and said it would close the British consulate in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said the U.K. will ban imports of all goods from the settlements and bar companies from providing services for the settlements, including financing, construction, infrastructure, real estate and advertising.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not believe the British people want us supporting the occupation by accepting products from settlements in our shops and supermarkets,\u201d Miliband said.<\/p>\n<p>In a joint statement, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said settlement expansion and settler violence in the West Bank \u201cpose a direct and urgent threat\u201d to the two-state solution. They said they decided to act \u201cbefore it is too late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The economic impact is likely to be limited, since the settlements produce only a small amount of largely agricultural exports. But the move is a symbolic expression of displeasure with Israel by some of its closest allies, and it offers a new sign of the Israeli government\u2019s growing isolation as a result of the Gaza war.<\/p>\n<p>Miliband said that he feels \u201ca deep sense of shame about what has unfolded in Palestine under the eyes of the international community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will not acquiesce in the destruction of the two-state solution,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar condemned the \u201cdespicable\u201d move. He said Israel would expel U.K. representatives from a joint military center monitoring the Gaza ceasefire and end U.K. training of the Palestinian Authority\u2019s security forces in the West Bank. In addition, Israel barred entry to a dozen British lawmakers and other U.K. citizens whom Sa\u2019ar said were \u201cinvolved in antisemitic and anti-Israel activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Settlements have expanded under Netanyahu<\/h2>\n<p>Under the ultranationalist government of Israeli Prime Minister\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/benjamin-netanyahu\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/a-look-at-how-settlements-have-grown-in-the-west-bank-over-the-years-0000019079d8d0f6a3da79dcbd0a0000\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">settlement construction<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in the West Bank \u2014 seized by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war \u2014 has surged. Netanyahu\u2019s government views the West Bank as the biblical and historical homeland of the Jewish people and is opposed to the creation of a Palestinian state.<\/p>\n<p>The international community overwhelmingly considers such construction to be illegal. Britain and other countries have voiced particular concern about the\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-settlement-construction-west-bank-cc5887809b15d336ecf16b88dfc0ee03\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">E1 settlement project<\/a><\/span>\u00a0approved by Israel, which would effectively cut the territory in two.<\/p>\n<div class=\"HTMLModuleEnhancement\" data-align-center=\"\" data-embed-enhanced=\"true\">\n<div class=\"HTMLModuleEnhancement-item\">\n<div class=\"HTMLModuleEnhancement-embed\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>There have been marked increases in attacks by settlers on Palestinians, evictions from Palestinian towns, Israeli military operations and checkpoints that choke freedom of movement, as well as several Palestinian attacks on Israelis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe British government agrees that there is ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in areas of the West Bank, perpetrated by settler terrorists,\u201d Miliband said. He said there had been \u201chouses bulldozed, roads and public infrastructure destroyed, families displaced from their homes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ban on trade will be in place in six to nine months, Miliband said. He said Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Poland, Portugal and Sweden have pledged to \u201csupport further action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, Spain and Norway have either banned goods from settlements or are in the process of doing so, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Miliband also tightened Britain\u2019s embargo on weapons sales to Israel for use in Gaza to include arms \u201cthat materially contribute to the occupation\u201d of Palestinian territories.<\/p>\n<h2>Move follows UK recognition of a Palestinian state<\/h2>\n<p>Britain\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/britain-palestine-recognition-israel-starmer-f667dca304a308b4b3ccf8100ef5051e\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">recognized Palestinian statehood<\/a><\/span>\u00a0last year in an attempt to revive dwindling efforts to achieve a two-state solution.<\/p>\n<p>In a change of Britain\u2019s position, Miliband said Tuesday that the U.K. regards Israel\u2019s occupation of the West Bank, and not just the settlements, as illegal.<\/p>\n<p>The new position is likely to be welcomed by many Labour voters and lawmakers, who have urged the government to go further in sanctioning Israel and supporting the Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>But some expressed concern that the sanctions could boost support for Netanyahu, who is facing\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-us-elections-gaza-hamas-disarmament-777525433fd69e8d1decddccb3f3d701\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">a tough battle for reelection<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in October, or lead to attacks on British Jews. The U.K.&#8217;s chief rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, said it was \u201ca dark day for British Jews.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Opposition Conservative Party foreign affairs spokesman Tom Tugendhat said that \u201cturning Israel into a pariah will risk sectarian division in our own country and risk a further rise in antisemitic violence on our own streets.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Announcement sparks anger in Israel<\/h2>\n<p>Before Miliband\u2019s announcement, Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel\u2019s hard-line public security minister and a settler leader, called on Netanyahu to recognize Argentina\u2019s claim to the Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic known in Argentina as the Malvinas.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli President Isaac Herzog called the ban \u201ca grave miscalculation, a decision that will fall on the wrong side of history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the current context, it would be a gross interference in the democratic elections of a sovereign nation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The move was also criticized by the U.S. ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, a longtime supporter of the settlements, who said that it was \u201cdiscrimination against the Jewish people.\u201d He said the U.K. could face \u201crepercussions or retaliations\u201d from the U.S. if it imposed the sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>Several U.S. states have laws banning contracts or investments with businesses that boycott Israeli firms, including those based in the West Bank.<\/p>\n<p>Burnham\u2019s office said he spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday and set out \u201cthe U.K.\u2019s commitment to working toward peace and security in the region\u201d and achieving a two-state solution.
