Westheimer joined the\u00a0Haganah<\/a>\u00a0Jewish\u00a0Zionist<\/a>\u00a0underground paramilitary organization (later, the\u00a0Israel Defense Forces<\/a>) in Jerusalem.[<\/span>29]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup>[<\/span>28]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup>[<\/span>30]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Because of her diminutive height of\u00a04<\/span>\u00a0feet 7\u00a0inches (140\u00a0cm), she was trained as a\u00a0scout<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0sniper<\/a>.[<\/span>27]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup>[<\/span>30]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup>[<\/span>31]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Of this experience, she said, “I never killed anybody, but I know how to throw\u00a0hand grenades<\/a>\u00a0and shoot.”[<\/span>32]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0She became an ace sniper, and learned to assemble a rifle in the dark.[<\/span>27]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup>[<\/span>14]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0When she was 90 years old, she demonstrated that she was still able to put together a\u00a0Sten gun<\/a>\u00a0with her eyes closed.[<\/span>33]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

In 1948, on her 20th birthday, Westheimer was seriously wounded in action by an exploding\u00a0shell<\/a>\u00a0during a\u00a0mortar fire<\/a>\u00a0attack on Jerusalem during the\u00a01948 Palestine war<\/a>; the explosion killed two girls who were right next to her.[<\/span>34]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup>[<\/span>30]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup>[<\/span>26]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Temporarily paralyzed and with two injured feet (one missing a top portion), she spent months in a recuperative ward before walking again.[<\/span>35]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup>[<\/span>36]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup>[<\/span>37]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In 2018 she said that she still visited Israel every year, and felt that it was her real home, and the following year said that she was and is a Zionist.[<\/span>26]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup>[<\/span>38]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n
