Later that day, a motorcade with US diplomatic plates was spotted in central Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>CBS News first reported that Ratcliffe was in Moscow for meetings, citing sources familiar with the situation. It was also not clear whether the visit \u2013 which ultimately lasted roughly eight hours \u2013 involved any other senior US officials.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rtcode\">\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"telegram-post-svezhesti-170737\" src=\"https:\/\/t.me\/svezhesti\/170737?embed=1\" width=\"100%\" height=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Asked by the Washington Post on Wednesday about the purpose of Ratcliffe\u2019s trip, Peskov said it was for\u00a0<em>\u201ccontacts between security services\u201d<\/em>\u00a0and declined to give further details. Separately, Peskov told TASS that\u00a0<em>\u201ccontacts with [Russian President Vladimir] Putin were not planned.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters later on Wednesday, Peskov said Putin had been kept in the loop about the talks, calling engagement between the special services\u00a0<em>\u201ca positive phenomenon.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0However, he cautioned that it is\u00a0<em>\u201ctoo early to say\u201d<\/em>\u00a0whether the talks\u00a0<em>\u201cwill affect the overall process of bringing our bilateral relations out of the deep crisis.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"rtcode\">\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"telegram-post-dimsmirnov175-132552\" src=\"https:\/\/t.me\/dimsmirnov175\/132552?embed=1\" width=\"100%\" height=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Media reports have floated several possible subjects of the secretive talks, including detainee negotiations, the Ukraine peace process, the Iran conflict, and broader questions of strategic stability.<\/p>\n<p>The last publicly disclosed contact between Ratcliffe and top Russian officials took place in March 2025, when the CIA director spoke by phone with Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) chief Sergey Naryshkin. At the time, the SVR said Russia and the US agreed to maintain dialogue in order to\u00a0<em>\u201cpromote international stability and security, as well as to reduce tensions in relations between Moscow and Washington.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ratcliffe\u2019s visit was the first known trip to Moscow by a CIA director since William Burns traveled there in November 2021, several months before the escalation of the Ukraine conflict.
