Dolly Parton, one of the most groundbreaking and successful musicians in the history of country music, with a hitmaking career that spanned six decades and launched her into TV and movie stardom,\u00a0died Tuesday<\/a><\/span>\u00a0after a brief cancer battle. She was 80.<\/p>\n

“After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her Earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by loved ones,” her team said in a statement to CBS News.<\/p>\n

Her nephew Bryan Seaver, who was his aunt’s head of security, announced her death in a prerecorded video\u00a0posted to social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“It is an honor, an honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness, but sadness lies with us, not with Dolly,” he said. “Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus.”<\/p>\n

Parton had health issues leading up to her death<\/h2>\n

Last October, Parton’s sister Freida Parton sparked concerns about the star’s health when she took to social media asking for prayers for her sister. Parton later\u00a0assured fans<\/a><\/span>\u00a0by saying that she wasn’t sick and was OK.<\/p>\n

But in May, Parton told fans in a social media video that she was responding well to treatment she was receiving, saying she’s long had issues with kidney stones and her immune system and digestive system “got all out of whack” over the past few years. She also said she wasn’t up to “stage performance level” and had to cancel upcoming performances in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n

Reactions pour in to Parton’s death<\/h2>\n

At the White House, President Trump\u00a0called her death<\/a>\u00a0“a true loss for millions of people” and ordered the American flag lowered across the country starting Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n

“There has never been anyone like her, and never will,” Mr. Trump said.<\/p>\n

Linda Ronstadt<\/a><\/span>, who worked with Parton and Emmylou Harris on 1987’s “Trio” album, was among the stars mourning Parton.<\/p>\n

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend, Dolly Parton,” Ronstadt said in a statement. “One of the most extraordinary musical experiences of my life was recording with her. The world is a poorer place without her.”<\/p>\n

Fellow country star Reba McEntire\u00a0posted a photo<\/a>\u00a0of the two singers together.<\/p>\n

“Your love, your music and you gave so much with your huge huge heart,” McEntire said. “There will never ever be another you. We will remember and cherish every memory and every note you ever played and sang. Thank you, Lord, for Dolly.”<\/p>\n

Julia Roberts<\/a><\/span>, who starred in 1989’s “Steel Magnolias” with Parton, called her “a magical and joyous human.”<\/p>\n

“I hold knowing her as a treasure in my life,” Roberts said in a statement. “The sun has dimmed today.”<\/p>\n

Actress Sally Field remembered Parton by\u00a0posting a group photo<\/a>\u00a0of the movie’s stars to social media.<\/p>\n

“If there are truly angels on earth, then we have just lost one. Dolly Parton,” Field said. “There will never be another. I adored her with all my heart and will always cherish our time together. Forever. Rest in peace beautiful Dolly.”<\/p>\n

In Los Angeles, Parton was remembered as a “once-in-a-lifetime talent” by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, and flowers\u00a0 were placed at her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In New York, the\u00a0Empire State Building<\/a>\u00a0paid tribute to the star by covering the top of the skyscraper in pink light.<\/p>\n

Parton won 10 Grammys over decades-long career<\/h2>\n

Since\u00a0breaking onto<\/a><\/span>\u00a0the country music scene with her 1967 debut “Hello, I’m Dolly,” Parton never seemed to slow down, releasing nearly 50 studio albums and selling more than 100 million records.<\/p>\n

A prolific songwriter, she won 10 Grammys and earned 55 nominations.<\/p>\n

But she treated her success with a certain modesty. In 2022, when she was nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, she tried to pull herself\u00a0out of the running<\/a><\/span>, saying she didn’t feel that she had “earned that right.” Her peers and fans vehemently\u00a0disagreed<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

In a\u00a02022 interview<\/a><\/span>\u00a0on “CBS Mornings,” she called it “an honor” to have so many loyal fans, but added that “it scares me to death sometimes. I’m always sayin’ I’m not all that, I’m even not all there sometimes.”<\/p>\n

Born on Jan. 19, 1946, Parton grew up in poverty in rural Tennessee, the fourth of 12 children.<\/p>\n

“Well, what they call ‘white trash,’ I don’t like anybody else calling me that, but to be called a hillbilly, I always take pride in that,”\u00a0she told CBS News<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in a 2016 interview.<\/p>\n

She began songwriting at a young age and got her break in 1966 when she moved to Nashville and was given a spot on country singer Porter Wagoner’s variety show, which she kept for seven years.<\/p>\n

She explained that she honed her distinctive look and style from a woman she knew, whom she described as a “town tramp” \u2014 upending expectations of how she should look and dress.<\/p>\n

“And she wore the makeup, red nails, red high heels, tight clothes,” Parton told CBS News. “I just thought she was the prettiest thing I’d ever seen. And people say, ‘Oh, she ain’t nothing but trash.’ But in my mind, I thought, ‘That’s what I’m going to be when I grow up.'”<\/p>\n

Her first No. 1 country hit came in 1970 with “Joshua,” but it was 1973’s “Jolene” that made her a household name.<\/p>\n

She said the song came about after meeting a young fan one night after a performance.<\/p>\n

“I remember this little redheaded girl with green eyes, prettiest little thing, and I said, ‘Well, what’s your name?’ And she said, ‘Jolene.’ I said, ‘I love that name.’ All the way back to the bus I was [singing], ‘Jolene, Jolene, Jolene,’ so I wouldn’t forget the name,” Parton\u00a0told CBS News<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in 2019.<\/p>\n

After a string of successful albums in the 1970s, she set her sights on Hollywood, making her major film debut in the 1980 feminist comedy classic “9 to 5,” alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, playing Doralee, a secretary who takes on her sexist boss. The movie was a huge hit and also earned Parton an Oscar nomination for the song of the same name.<\/p>\n

Two years later, she starred in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” which garnered her a Golden Globe nomination for best actress. She went on to star alongside Field, Roberts and Shirley MacLaine in “Steel Magnolias.”<\/p>\n

Parton was renowned for her musical collaborations with the likes of Harris, Ronstadt, Loretta Lynn and Willie Nelson. In 1983, she recorded “Islands in the Stream” with Kenny Rogers, a song that had been penned by the Bee Gees. It went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.<\/p>\n

She released “I Will Always Love You” in 1974, but it took on a second life when it was recorded by the late Whitney Houston for the 1992 film “The Bodyguard.” Parton said it didn’t bother her that many mistakenly assumed Houston wrote the song.<\/p>\n

“I say, ‘You got that right,'” Parton told CBS News. “And other people they kind of say, ‘No, that’s Dolly Parton’s song.’ I said, ‘Look, she can have the credit. I just want the cash.’ And I made plenty of it all off of Whitney, thank God.”<\/p>\n

Her longevity in the music industry was staggering, setting a\u00a0Guinness World Record<\/a><\/span>\u00a0for the longest span of No. 1 hits on the country charts for a female artist at 43 years, from 1977 to 2020.<\/p>\n

Showing a keen business acumen, Parton in the mid-1980s bought a stake in a theme park in Knoxville, Tennessee, that was subsequently renamed Dollywood, and continues to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Parton would perform frequently at the park.<\/p>\n

Over the years, she also became known for giving back. She launched her Dollywood Foundation in 1988 to help boost graduation rates in the community where she grew up. Her commitment to education continued when Dollywood announced in 2022 that\u00a0it would pay full tuition<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and fees for any employee who chose to pursue higher education.<\/p>\n

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Parton\u00a0donated $1 million<\/a><\/span>\u00a0for medical research at Vanderbilt University that helped lead to the lifesaving\u00a0Moderna vaccine<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

“I’m just happy that anything I do can help somebody else,” she said at the time. “When I donated money to the COVID fund, I just wanted it to do good and evidently, it is. Let’s just hope we find a cure real soon.”<\/p>\n

Recognizing her long history of philanthropy, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his partner, Lauren Sanchez, honored Parton in 2022 with a\u00a0$100 million Courage and Civility award<\/a><\/span>, with the money to be directed toward charities of her choice.<\/p>\n

“When people are in a position to help, you should help. And I know that I’ve always said, ‘I try to put my money where my heart is,’ and I think you do the same thing,” Parton said to Bezos when accepting the grant.<\/p>\n

“Her unmatched generosity reached the lives of countless people whom she would never meet, yet she was always there to offer a helping hand,” her team said in Tuesday’s statement. “Whether it be the hundreds of millions of books donated through her invaluable Imagination Library or funding research that helped create a lifesaving vaccine used around the world, Dolly’s unconditional love for all people was the guiding force for her lasting impact.”<\/p>\n

Parton’s husband died in 2025<\/h2>\n

Parton was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, who\u00a0died<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in March 2025 at the age of 82. The couple never had children, a conscious choice Parton told CBS News she didn’t regret.<\/p>\n

“It wasn’t meant to be,” she said. “And I don’t regret it. I never regretted it. I mean, it was a choice. So, you make your choices, you make your sacrifices, and I never looked back. I knew early on that I was gonna walk that road till God told me to stop. And I’m still walking it, and he ain’t said nothing to me about quittin’ yet!”<\/p>\n
