It can often recur even after a tumor is surgically removed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-text\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"4D6RNES5NBAJJA2WK2AMKCYOB4\" data-el=\"text\">On patients with resected melanoma \u2014 a tumor that was completely removed \u2014 the drug was previously found in Phase 2 trials to cut the risk of recurrence or death by nearly<b> <\/b>half after five years when combined with an approved immunotherapy, Keytruda, compared with patients who were just given Keytruda.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-text\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"WQHC6EJMAJB7JDCDFX44JAPIPE\" data-el=\"text\">Under the same regimen, intismeran also prevented recurrence and metastasis in the larger, Phase 3 trial of 1,137 patients, Merck and Moderna said Wednesday. The companies did not release the full results of the study itself, which have not yet been independently reviewed, but said the trial met its primary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/publications\/dictionaries\/cancer-terms\/def\/endpoint\" rel=\"\">endpoint<\/a> of improving recurrence-free survival. They will announce data from the trial in an upcoming meeting.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-text\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"TPU7ODZMRZEI5POUFWXMORIAMQ\" data-el=\"text\">Merck, which also makes Keytruda, and Moderna have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in personalized mRNA cancer-vaccine technology since the mid-2010s, well before the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-text\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"ONF6H47MZ5H7LHHNB5JQ46ITDA\" data-el=\"text\">The stakes extend well beyond melanoma. Experts said the trial\u2019s success could help establish a new way of treating cancer; versions of the treatment are already being studied in lung, kidney, bladder and other cancers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-text subtype-from-the-source\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"GXHMWP3CJVABZJAMPCXXRJ5ABU\" data-el=\"text\">\u201cThis is exciting,\u201d said Antoni Ribas, a professor of medicine at the University of California at Los Angeles, of the intismeran trial results. \u201cThat hasn\u2019t happened ever, with any cancer vaccine.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-header\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<h2 id=\"JKJ2KRS3RVEB7MGFTXNPXWIH4M\" class=\"wpds-c-XIGbK wpds-c-XIGbK-iivLrAs-css headingStyleOverrides\" data-apitype=\"header\" data-contentid=\"JKJ2KRS3RVEB7MGFTXNPXWIH4M\" data-testid=\"article-header\">\u2018The next frontier\u2019<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-text\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"3KPNXLOUSFG7NFOK57FVZREYKM\" data-el=\"text\">Intismeran represents a significant advance in cancer care.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-text\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"G5BVHEUUSJCELBDC3OXDPQX4QI\" data-el=\"text\">Rather than giving every patient the same treatment, researchers first sequence a patient\u2019s tumor and compare it with normal cells to identify mutations unique to the cancer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-text\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"WMIB4U22GVAVLJJUWEO7KKHP2Y\" data-el=\"text\">A computer algorithm then selects up to 34 of the resulting abnormal proteins most likely to attract an immune response, and those instructions are encoded into a custom-made mRNA vaccine for that individual patient.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-text\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"DFXBBYCFMFGKVCXHPKPJHJ2YTE\" data-el=\"text\">The personalized mRNA vaccine and Keytruda are designed to deliver a one-two punch against cancer. The vaccine teaches the immune system to recognize mutations unique to a patient\u2019s tumor, essentially showing it what to attack.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-text\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"OHREAEWRWFCW3DTIWO6MWF6QJU\" data-el=\"text\">Keytruda then helps release a \u201cbrake\u201d that cancer can use to hold the immune system back, allowing immune cells to more effectively attack the cancer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-text subtype-from-the-source\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"WLOBASE3X5HWBCAAYRK7VNA2CI\" data-el=\"text\">\u201cThis is representative of the next frontier of cancer immunotherapy,\u201d Karen Knudsen, CEO of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, wrote to The Post.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-text\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"W5MHFCJA2VDBHFQODUE33TPO4M\" data-el=\"text\">Knudsen added that longer follow-ups would be needed to determine if the protection against recurrence caused by the drug continues to hold up in patients over time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-text\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"BV37NQJJ5BBNFOCVFHJUNOCEYE\" data-el=\"text\">The safety profile of intismeran and Keytruda \u201cremains consistent\u201d with its previous reports, which have noted that the number of serious reactions were comparable to patients who received only Keytruda, Merck and Moderna said. The most commonly reported side effects related to intismeran were fatigue, pain at the site of injection, and chills, the drugmakers disclosed in December 2023.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-text\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"6LOIFNF4JVG7PG3NSSQD4ESE34\" data-el=\"text\">MRNA-based treatments deliver instructions to cells to produce specific proteins that trigger the body\u2019s immune response and gained prominence as the platform that allowed drugmakers to speedily develop the coronavirus vaccines during the covid-19 pandemic. They have since come under fire from the Trump administration, which has cast largely <a class=\"js-itid-click\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2025\/06\/14\/celebrated-then-disparaged-mrnas-promise-is-tarnished-under-trump\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2025\/06\/14\/celebrated-then-disparaged-mrnas-promise-is-tarnished-under-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unfounded claims<\/a> about the technology\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-text\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"FSEBAHQRLNFDXFP72X6PPS3QQI\" data-el=\"text\">MRNA injections can be faster <a class=\"js-itid-click\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/interactive\/2020\/covid-vaccines-what-you-need-to-know\/\" rel=\"\">to design<\/a> and manufacture than conventional vaccines.
