WASHINGTON<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 The United States has approved the\u00a0permanent transfer of American-origin military equipment<\/strong>\u00a0from T\u00fcrkiye to Ukraine, including\u00a070 M39 ATACMS missiles, 12 M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) launchers, 2,524 M26 rockets and 47,000 M509A1 203 mm artillery rounds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The transfer requires\u00a0U.S. authorization<\/strong>\u00a0because the weapons were originally supplied to T\u00fcrkiye by the United States. The\u00a0U.S. State Department<\/strong>\u00a0notified Congress of the proposed permanent transfer on\u00a0August 3, 2026<\/strong>, and the notification was published in the\u00a0Congressional Record on August 6<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The equipment is being transferred from\u00a0Turkish inventories to Ukraine<\/strong>. According to the notification, T\u00fcrkiye wants to reduce its inventory of older defense equipment and use its financial resources for the\u00a0modernization and sustainment<\/strong>\u00a0of its existing systems. Ukraine is seeking the equipment to strengthen its\u00a0offensive and defensive fire-support capabilities<\/strong>. The notification also states that Ukraine already possesses weapons of the same or essentially similar types.<\/p>\n
