Military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree confirmed that ballistic missiles were launched at a Saudi tanker called Wafa near the Saudi port city of Yanbu.<\/p>\n<p>A second oil tanker identified as Daisy was subsequently hit in the Gulf of Aden with a ballistic missile and &#8220;forced to turn back&#8221; &#8211; the spokesman said in a\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Yahya_Saree\/status\/2085066483885813961\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social media post<\/a>. The Arab publication says that a<strong>\u00a0Houthi attack killed 45 government forces in Hadramawt and Marib in Yemen<\/strong>, areas which also happen to be home to the vast majority of the country&#8217;s oil and gas fields.<\/p>\n<p>Separately Al Jazeera describes of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/liveblog\/2026\/8\/6\/iran-war-live-tehran-oman-close-in-on-hormuz-deal-houthis-attack-tankers\">same event<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The Yemeni Emergency Forces of the internationally-recognised government, have said that there have been material and human losses following attacks on its camps.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Several causalities have been reported after a\u00a0<strong>suspected Houthi rocket and drone attack targeted bases\u00a0<\/strong>hosting the forces in Marib and Hadramaut.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So now it seems that even if a grand Hormuz deal to reopen energy transit can be pulled off with some level of sticking power,\u00a0<strong>there will have to be a separate ceasefire to contain the Yemen and Bab al-Mandab Strait crisis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To some degree, the Houthi closure of the Red Sea to Saudi shipping represents a good cop, bad cop approach to the United States and its Gulf allies. Saudi Arabia and a coalition of partners intervened in 2015 with the explicit aim of reversing that takeover and restoring the internationally recognized government, and the war has continued in one form or another ever since.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The middle doll is Saudi Arabia\u2019s broader rivalry with Iran, a contest for regional leadership that has run since Iran\u2019s 1979 Islamic Revolution, when Tehran\u2019s new theocratic government began exporting a revolutionary, Shia-inflected challenge to the Gulf\u2019s Sunni monarchies.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the meantime,\u00a0<em>Al Jazeera<\/em>\u00a0is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/liveblog\/2026\/8\/6\/iran-war-live-tehran-oman-close-in-on-hormuz-deal-houthis-attack-tankers\">reporting<\/a>\u00a0Thursday that the<strong>\u00a0Saudi-backed government shot down a drone operated by the Houthis over the city of Marib<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The country&#8217;s official SABA news agency said the Houthi targeting of Marib &#8220;embodies their escalatory approach and their insistence on continuing their terrorist acts&#8221; and that &#8220;the air defenses engaged the drone as soon as it entered the city\u2019s airspace and successfully shot it down.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Over in the Persian Gulf region, Iran officials have\u00a0said a deal with Oman to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is<strong>\u00a0&#8220;on the verge of being finalized&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>which entry and exit routes and protocols having been established.
