The lead investor in a South Korean aluminum company that has challenged Commerce Department penalties on certain exports from South Korea to the United States made a $2 million payment last year to President Trump\u2019s holding company.<\/p>\n

The payment by the parent company, Base Group, was revealed for the first time in Mr. Trump\u2019s annual financial\u00a0disclosure form<\/a>\u00a0released in late June\u2026.<\/p>\n

The efforts by Base Group to build ties with Mr. Trump and his family come as its corporate affiliate, Korea Aluminium, has curbed exports to the United States after the Commerce Department\u00a0concluded<\/a>\u00a0that a group of South Korean\u00a0companies<\/a>\u00a0circumvented trade duties on Chinese-made aluminum.<\/p>\n

The New York Times found no evidence that Mr. Trump or a member of his family had intervened with U.S. officials on behalf of Base Group or Korea Aluminium. Base Group also disputed that it had violated any U.S. trade rules.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
