Newly declassified documents<\/a>\u00a0released Thursday by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard show that a U.S. national laboratory assessed the COVID-19 lab-origin hypothesis as a serious possibility as early as May 2020, as well as\u00a0evidence\u00a0of U.S.-funded coronavirus research<\/strong>\u00a0that included\u00a0planning for spike-protein modifications, receptor-adaptation experiments, and testing in humanized mice<\/strong>\u00a0in collaboration with researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.<\/p>\nThe documents also prove that Anthony Fauci lied under oath.<\/p>\n<\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The release, issued on Gabbard\u2019s last day on the job, includes an eight-page May 27, 2020, assessment from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory\u2019s Z Program. When asked about the CIA, he answered yes: he said he was briefed \u201conce or twice\u201d in a secure NIH facility and also recalled a briefing in a White House situation room.<\/p>\n<p>The newly released documents then\u00a0<strong>show a June 4, 2021 briefing involving CIA\/WCP personnel, NSC officials, and Fauci<\/strong>, during which Fauci offered views on pangolin research, sick WIV researchers, single-lineage vs. multi-lineage evidence, and recommended scientists for the IC to contact. The authors presented the method as a tool for \u201cgenome-scale DNA reconstruction,\u201d a technique relevant to synthetic biology and virus engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Surveillance work under the same NIH grant reported that 9 of 1,497 rural residents in southern China (0.6%) were seropositive for bat SARS-related or HKU10 coronaviruses.<\/p>\n<p>And from leaked emails three years ago:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Among other things, the NIH helped fund experiments at WIV t<strong>hat infected genetically engineered mice with \u201cchimeric\u201d hybrids of SARS-related bat coronaviruses\u00a0<\/strong>in what some scientists have described as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2021\/09\/09\/covid-origins-gain-of-function-research\/\">unacceptably risky research<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>…<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Andersen laid them out plainly in an email to Fauci that same evening. \u201c<strong>The unusual features of the virus make up a really small part of the genome (<0.1%) so one has to look really closely at all the sequences to see that some of the features (potentially) look engineered,<\/strong>\u201d Andersen wrote in the email. \u201cI should mention,\u201d he added, \u201cthat after discussions earlier today, Eddie, Bob, Mike and myself a<strong>ll find the genome inconsistent with expectations from evolutionary theory<\/strong>. One analyst noted the risk that non-experts could misinterpret technical data while still calling for scrutiny. Another observed that \u201cthe IC took direction straight from NIH\u2026 the people that funded the Wuhan Lab\u201d and referenced \u201ca complex web of money and politics influencing analysis.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Picking Their Reviewer<\/h2>\n<p>July 2021 emails concerning<strong>\u00a0the selection of outside reviewers for COVID-origin assessments<\/strong>\u00a0show officials rejecting several candidates for political sensitivity or conflict-of-interest reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>James Clapper was viewed as too politically \u201chot.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Anthony Fauci was flagged due to his position as a \u201ccustomer\u201d of the assessment through NIH funding ties.<\/li>\n<li>Michael Morell was considered \u201ctoo public.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Sue Gordon and another individual identified only as \u201cBeth\u201d were also set aside.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>And so…<\/h2>\n<p>These materials provide primary-source documentation that\u00a0<strong>a U.S. national laboratory assessed a laboratory origin as equally plausible to natural emergence at a time when prominent scientific publications were publicly emphasizing a natural zoonotic source<\/strong>\u00a0and characterizing alternative hypotheses as conspiracy theories.
