President Donald Trump has suggested that the US would attack its ally Oman if it attempts to seize control of the Strait of Hormuz, which has effectively been closed since the US and Israel launched attacks against Iran in February.<\/p>\n
According to Reuters, Trump made the remarks after Iranian state TV reported that it obtained an unofficial draft agreement that would reopen the vital waterway, with Iran and Oman jointly managing maritime traffic.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, the strait is going to be open to everybody,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Trump told journalists during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019ll watch over it, but nobody\u2019s going to control it. That\u2019s part of the negotiation that we have.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s international waters. And Oman will behave just like everybody else, or we\u2019ll have to blow them up. They understand that. They\u2019ll be fine,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Trump said.<\/p>\n Oman, a key US ally, mediated talks on Iran\u2019s nuclear program until they were suspended by the conflict.<\/p>\n Iran and Oman lie on opposite sides of the narrowest part of the Strait of Hormuz, which normally handles around 25% of global seaborne oil trade and 20% of liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments.<\/p>\n
