TALLAHASSEE, Fla. \u2013 A\u00a0bill<\/a>\u00a0to prohibit \u201cweather modification activities\u201d has been filed in the Florida Senate.<\/p>\n

The bill, SB 56, was introduced on Nov. 20 by Republican Sen. Ileana Garcia. A House version of the bill has yet to be filed.<\/p>\n

The bill states the \u201cinjection, release, or dispersion, by any means, of a chemical, a chemical compound, a substance, or an apparatus into the atmosphere within the borders of this state for the express purpose of affecting the temperature, the weather, or the intensity of sunlight is prohibited.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the bill\u00a0text<\/a>, any individual or corporation that conducts a weather modification operation in violation of this section will be charged with a second-degree misdemeanor and may face a fine of up to $10,000.<\/p>\n

Last\u00a0May<\/a>, the Tampa Bay Young Republicans issued a\u00a0statement<\/a>\u00a0urging the Florida Legislature to introduce a bill banning \u201cweather modification projects\u201d in the state.<\/p>\n

The group argued that chemicals used in weather modification have proven to result in health consequences for the communities they\u2019re in. The contamination occurs in the air, on farms and in water supplies.<\/p>\n

Interim committee\u00a0meetings<\/a>\u00a0start the week of Dec. 9. The regular session will\u00a0begin<\/a>\u00a0March 4, 2025 and will run through May 2, 2025.<\/p>\n
