{"id":55936,"date":"2026-03-18T07:01:56","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T11:01:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateofthenation.info\/?p=55936"},"modified":"2026-03-18T07:01:56","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T11:01:56","slug":"the-iran-war-is-the-most-unpopular-conflict-in-u-s-history-and-the-numbers-are-staggering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation.info\/?p=55936","title":{"rendered":"<h2><b>The Iran war is the most unpopular conflict in U.S. history, and the numbers are staggering<\/b><\/h2>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more--><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-55937\" src=\"http:\/\/stateofthenation.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Screenshot-2026-03-18-at-7.00.16-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"597\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Screenshot-2026-03-18-at-7.00.16-AM.png 597w, https:\/\/stateofthenation.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Screenshot-2026-03-18-at-7.00.16-AM-300x204.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 597px) 100vw, 597px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content   \" data-mrf-recirculation=\"ct_article_links\">\n<hr \/>\n<p>By Nick Moyle | NJ.com<\/p>\n<p id=\"2CX2IV32IVBKLE4U5Z46YGUYLI\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">The war with<b>\u00a0<\/b>Iran that\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/topic\/donald-trump\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/topic\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/topic\/donald-trump\/\">President Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0launched on Feb. 28 stands as a\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/10\/us\/politics\/polls-wars-us-support.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/10\/us\/politics\/polls-wars-us-support.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/10\/us\/politics\/polls-wars-us-support.html\">remarkable outlier<\/a> among major American conflicts over the past 90 years.<\/p>\n<p id=\"PXNUA636VZCTPHOJ424VYHK3T4\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">Decades of\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/polls\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/polls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/polls\/\">polling data<\/a> going back to World War II show that a larger percentage of Americans were opposed to U.S. military intervention in Iran than any previous foreign conflict.<\/p>\n<p id=\"OWONLCU2LVC3FKJCIDU3W6TZZM\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">A\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/10\/us\/politics\/polls-wars-us-support.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/10\/us\/politics\/polls-wars-us-support.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/10\/us\/politics\/polls-wars-us-support.html\">New York Times analysis<\/a>\u00a0found just 41% of Americans\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/politics\/2026\/03\/heres-where-most-americans-stand-in-all-polls-on-trumps-war-in-iran.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/politics\/2026\/03\/heres-where-most-americans-stand-in-all-polls-on-trumps-war-in-iran.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/politics\/2026\/03\/heres-where-most-americans-stand-in-all-polls-on-trumps-war-in-iran.html\">supported<\/a>\u00a0launching a war on Iran when the U.S. and Israel bombed Tehran, far lower than support for most other historical conflicts at their outset.\u00a0<i>(Note: There were no public approval polls available at the start of the Vietnam War.)<\/i><\/p>\n<p id=\"REY5ZRN23BFDLBDEV7ROMDWXBM\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">Of the 10 major U.S. military conflicts since 1941, only the Iran War and 2011 intervention in Libya were not backed by a majority of Americans.<\/p>\n<p id=\"N2XJZWFJQZC7PMOFVE5MEZX4OE\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">Around 47% of Americans supported the Obama administration\u2019s strikes on Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi\u2019s forces in March 2011. The U.S. House later\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/06\/04\/world\/africa\/04policy.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/06\/04\/world\/africa\/04policy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/06\/04\/world\/africa\/04policy.html\">rebuked President Barack Obama<\/a> for continuing to maintain an American role in NATO\u2019s operations without the express consent of Congress.<\/p>\n<p id=\"JELVKTJVOZDQNEYT2D5P6VYTQI\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">The Afghanistan War launched in 2001 and the Iraq War that began in 2003 had the support of 92% and 76% of Americans, respectively, when those operations began. It was only after those conflicts began that public sentiment\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/a-recent-poll-shows-how-americans-think-about-the-war-in-afghanistan\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/a-recent-poll-shows-how-americans-think-about-the-war-in-afghanistan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/a-recent-poll-shows-how-americans-think-about-the-war-in-afghanistan\/\">shifted drastically<\/a>\u00a0toward\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2023\/03\/14\/a-look-back-at-how-fear-and-false-beliefs-bolstered-u-s-public-support-for-war-in-iraq\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2023\/03\/14\/a-look-back-at-how-fear-and-false-beliefs-bolstered-u-s-public-support-for-war-in-iraq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2023\/03\/14\/a-look-back-at-how-fear-and-false-beliefs-bolstered-u-s-public-support-for-war-in-iraq\/\">majority opposition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"F2T6SYTQDJGXNFIQGFUYVOPXYA\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">In contrast, Americans were in\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/vault\/265865\/gallup-vault-opinion-start-world-war.aspx\" href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/vault\/265865\/gallup-vault-opinion-start-world-war.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/vault\/265865\/gallup-vault-opinion-start-world-war.aspx\">near-universal agreement<\/a> about the U.S. formally entering World War II in December 1941 following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
