A bill seeking to make Greenland the 51st US state has been introduced in the House of Representatives, escalating a controversial push by President Donald Trump to bring the Danish territory under American control.<\/p>\n

Trump claimed last week that the US must annex Greenland \u2013 an autonomous former Danish colony under Copenhagen\u2019s sovereignty \u2013 to contain Russia and China, suggesting that the two countries will\u00a0take over\u00a0the island unless Washington does it first.<\/p>\n

The Greenland Annexation and Statehood Act,\u00a0introduced by Republican Representative Randy Fine of Florida on Monday, would authorize the president to take\u00a0\u201cwhatever steps necessary to annex or acquire Greenland,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0and mandates a report to Congress outlining the steps required for its eventual admission as a US state.<\/p>\n
