Leaders around the world expressed their horror at Sunday\u2019s terrorist attack on Bondi beach, in which\u00a0at least 16 people died<\/a>, mixed in some cases with harsh words for the Australian government for alleged shortcomings in tackling antisemitism over the past two years.<\/p>\n

The Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said he had written to his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, in August, warning that the government\u2019s\u00a0decision to recognise a Palestinian state<\/a>\u00a0\u201cpours fuel on the antisemitic fire \u2026 emboldens those who menace Australian Jews and encourages the Jew hatred now stalking your streets\u201d. He claimed Albanese had \u201creplaced weakness with weakness and appeasement with more appeasement\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour government did nothing to stop the spread of antisemitism in Australia. You did nothing to curb the cancer cells that were growing inside your country. You took no action. You let the disease spread and the result is the horrific attacks on Jews we saw today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Albanese declined to respond directly when asked about Netanyahu\u2019s comments at a media conference on Monday morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a moment for national unity,\u201d Albanese said in response. \u201cThis is a moment for Australians to come together. That\u2019s precisely what we\u2019ll be doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Netanyahu praised the actions of a\u00a0bystander who wrestled the gun from one of the attackers<\/a>, saying he saluted \u201ca Muslim brave man\u201d who prevented the death of \u201cinnocent Jews\u201d (the man\u2019s religion was unconfirmed as of Monday morning).<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we are worrying right now about our people, our safety, and we do not remain silent,\u201d Netanyahu said. \u201cWe fight those who try to annihilate us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Israeli president, Isaac Herzog, said in a video message posted online that \u201cvile terrorists deliberately targeted innocent Jewish families celebrating the first night of Hanukah\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe people of Israel stand together with all of you in this very dark and difficult moment \u2026 the Jewish people are strong, resilient and united, and our message is clear: the Hanukah lights must go on and will be lit all over the world, especially in Bondi beach, in Sydney and all over Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n
