Israeli-U.S. geoengineering company Stardust Solutions has announced a $60 million fundraising round for its efforts to block the sun by spraying particles into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n

Stardust says they have created a powder that they promise \u201cwouldn\u2019t accumulate in humans or ecosystems, and can\u2019t harm the ozone layer or create acid rain like the sulfur-rich particles from volcanoes.\u201d<\/p>\n

But it refuses to disclose what the particles are actually made of, rendering those promises meaningless without transparency, independent verification, or the public\u2019s informed consent.<\/p>\n

The startup will use the money to begin \u201ccontrolled outdoor experiments\u201d as soon as April, according to a\u00a0POLITICO<\/a>\u00a0report that broke the news. \u201cThose tests would release the company\u2019s reflective particles inside a modified plane flying about 11 miles (18 kilometers) above sea level.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Such technology is \u201cthinly researched and mostly unregulated,\u201d POLITICO notes.<\/p>\n

It could even \u201cdisrupt global weather patterns and trigger geopolitical conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n

The investors were reportedly just \u201cputting their trust in the concept,\u201d instead of demanding proof that tampering in such a significant and dangerous way with sunlight won\u2019t unleash irreversible atmospheric or geopolitical fallout.<\/p>\n

More than 590 climate scientists and governance scholars now support a worldwide moratorium on such experiments involving the sun, and have called for an \u2018International Non-Use Agreement on Solar Geoengineering<\/a>.\u2019<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, Stardust has now raised a total of $75 million for its sun-blocking scheme.<\/p>\n

The fundraising haul was led by Wyoming-based climate technology firm Lowercarbon Capital.<\/p>\n

Stardust is registered in Delaware but headquartered near Tel Aviv, Israel.<\/p>\n

It has big plans and needs federal muscle to carry them out.<\/p>\n

The company is looking to secure government contracts for \u201cdeploying its technology at a global scale,\u201d according to POLITICO.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Stardust doesn\u2019t have any patents or peer-reviewed publications on its integrated solar geoengineering system yet.<\/p>\n

A Secretive Bid to Control the Sky<\/h3>\n

In March,\u00a0Wired<\/em>\u00a0revealed<\/a>\u00a0that Stardust was quietly developing a form of solar geoengineering to \u201cblock sun rays from reaching the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Founded in 2023 and led by former Israeli nuclear physicists Yanai Yedvab and Amyad Spector, the company operates as a for-profit climate contractor, aiming to sell aerosol-based cooling technology directly to governments.<\/p>\n

Stardust said at the time it had plans to disperse proprietary reflective particles from aircraft, though it wouldn\u2019t reveal what the spray is made of.<\/p>\n

The company had no published research, no code of conduct, and no public oversight, prompting experts to warn it lacks a \u201csocial license\u201d for its activities.<\/p>\n

Environmental groups, including CIEL and Friends of the Earth, have called the project \u201ca reckless race\u201d that could violate the U.N.\u2019s geoengineering moratorium and \u201chold governments hostage with technology patents.\u201d<\/p>\n

Critics pointed to Stardust\u2019s military-linked venture capital funding and warn that if its experiments go wrong, they could alter global weather patterns or damage the ozone layer, with no international rules to stop it.<\/p>\n

Stardust\u2019s experiment marks the moment private industry begins rewriting the atmosphere itself\u2014without public knowledge, informed consent, or independent oversight\u2014turning the Earth into a test site for an unproven technology no one voted for.<\/p>\n
