Tropical Storm Erin likely to become major hurricane over the weekend<\/h2>\n
Forecasters continue to monitor Tropical Storm Erin as it spins across the Atlantic, and the system is forecast to become a hurricane in a few days and a major hurricane over the weekend. MIAMI \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Tropical Storm<\/a>\u00a0Erin formed in the central Atlantic\u00a0Ocean<\/a>\u00a0on Monday morning and is forecast to become the first major\u00a0hurricane<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a02025 Atlantic hurricane season<\/a>\u00a0after causing at least seven deaths in the Cabo Verde islands off the coast of\u00a0Africa<\/a>.<\/p>\n The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said that maximum sustained\u00a0winds<\/a> within Tropical Storm Erin remained at 45 mph with some higher gusts.<\/p>\n A tropical storm is a tropical cyclone that has maximum sustained winds of 39-73 mph and is a step above a\u00a0tropical depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n Tropical Storm Erin is located about 560 miles west-northwest of the Cabo Verde islands and was moving off to the west at 22 mph.<\/p>\n That motion is expected to continue for the next several days with a gradual slowdown in forward speed and a turn to the west-northwest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Tropical Storm Erin is expected to gradually strengthen and is expected to become a hurricane in the next few days.<\/p>\n The latest forecast track shows Erin moving north of Puerto Rico by this weekend with gradual strengthening to a hurricane. Erin could become the first major hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season if it reaches\u00a0Category 3<\/a>\u00a0strength. A hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 111-129 mph is considered to be a Category 3 cyclone on the\u00a0Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale<\/a>.<\/p>\n Before becoming Tropical Storm Erin, the system brought torrential rain and thunderstorms to the Cabo Verde, or Cape Verde, islands when it was\u00a0Invest 97L<\/a>.<\/p>\n Local officials said at least seven people, including children, were killed.<\/p>\n “The Ministry of Education expresses its deepest sorrow for the tragic loss of seven lives, including four children, on the island of S\u00e3o Vincent,” the Ministry of Education\u00a0said in a translated Facebook post<\/a>. The Ministry went on to say “in this time of mourning and dismay, the pain of the bereaved families is the pain of the entire nation.”<\/p>\nAt least 7 dead in Cabo Verde islands<\/strong><\/h2>\n
