Bill Threatens India<\/h1>\n<p><!--more-->Submitted by Renee Parsons<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The use of arbitrary <a href=\"https:\/\/ofac.treasury.gov\/sanctions-programs-and-country-information\"><span class=\"s1\">sanctions<\/span><\/a> has been freely used by the US as a foreign policy tool or as an economic weapon against countries or individuals which dare to deviate from the global Empire\u2019s established policies.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Many of those sanctions constitute trade restrictions, national security goals or may damage US economic interests or even block certain assets until and unless the errant country amends its behavior.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Once applied, those sanctions may continue for an indeterminate amount of time until the US Department of Treasury or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/division-for-counter-threat-finance-and-sanctions\/economic-sanctions-programs\"><span class=\"s1\">State Department<\/span><\/a> decide that removal of economic sanctions are appropriate to reward or incentivize improved behavior.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/division-for-counter-threat-finance-and-sanctions\/ukraine-and-russia-sanctions\"><span class=\"s1\">Russia<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/iran-sanctions\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Iran<\/span><\/a> may be among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.castellum.ai\/russia-sanctions-dashboard\"><span class=\"s1\">most sanctioned<\/span><\/a> countries in the world as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/world\/us-imposes-visa-sanctions-on-palestinian-authority-officials-plo-members\/ar-AA1JFUrk?ocid=BingNewsSerp\"><span class=\"s1\">Palestinian Authority<\/span><\/a> is sanctioned even as much of the world favors statehood for Palestine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/asia-pacific\/factbox-20-years-of-western-sanctions-on-russia\/3637684\"><span class=\"s1\">misuse<\/span><\/a> of sanctions has been cited as a counter productive, coercive factor as the BRICS<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>formed a multipolar alliance as an alternative to the intimidating influence conducted by the global hegemony favoring western institutions.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>By <a href=\"https:\/\/brics.br\/en\/about-the-brics\"><span class=\"s1\">2025 BRICS<\/span><\/a> membership grew to include Egypt, Ethiopia, UAE, Iran and Indonesia including<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u2018<i>partner<\/i>\u2019 members with Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Based on facilitating trade using local currency rather than the Dollar, BRICS represents <a href=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/2025\/07\/04\/brics-expansion-population-gdp-vietnam\/\"><span class=\"s1\">56%<\/span><\/a> of the world population and 44% of global GDP. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As if to acknowledge the contrast, the US maintains a vigorous military industrial complex as it retains its status as the <a href=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/2025\/03\/13\/us-top-weapons-exports-china-russia\/\"><span class=\"s1\">number one arms dealer<\/span><\/a> in the world with exports at 43%, more than either China or Russia while the US debt has increased to $37 trillion with a daily<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.armstrongeconomics.com\/armstrongeconomics101\/economics\/2-4-billion-daily-servicing-the-us-national-debt\/\"><span class=\"s1\">$2.4 billion<\/span><\/a> interest payment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">***<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Despite the inaugural assurance that President Trump would end the Ukraine war, the conflict has spilled over into social media with a series of snit fits as the erratic Trump provoked Russian President Putin to end the war in fifty days \u2026.\u201d<i>or else<\/i>\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Not unexpectedly, Trump changed the fifty days to ten or twelve days and then inexplicably further reduced the time frame to six days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a typical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/trump-keeps-republicans-off-russia-094712464.html\"><span class=\"s1\">over-reaction<\/span><\/a> to a recent Medvedev <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/world\/trump-and-medvedevs-war-of-words-escalates-to-nuclear-threats\/ar-AA1JFbDk?ocid=BingNewsSerp\"><span class=\"s1\">social media<\/span><\/a> post, Trump traded insults on social media as he escalated his own crisis from which there is little escape with an ill-conceived response that might be worrisome as he ordered two US Navy nuclear submarines into strategic position.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114942106248731470\"><span class=\"s1\">TruthSocial post<\/span><\/a>, Trump declared \u201c<i>Stop the killing in Ukraine<\/i>\u201d yet the President has repeatedly failed to connect the dots:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>that if he stopped US support for Ukraine, the war would be over within twenty four hours.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Former Russian President Medvedev responded <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MedvedevRussiaE\/status\/1949870764938711343?ref_src=twsrc%255Etfw%257Ctwcamp%255Etweetembed%257Ctwterm%255E1949870764938711343%257Ctwgr%255Ec5b34e7c08d0e845b369489271b197a31231835f%257Ctwcon%255Es1_&amp;ref_url=https:\/\/www.theweek.in\/news\/world\/2025\/08\/02\/what-did-dmitry-medvedev-say-to-make-donald-trump-move-two-nuclear-submarines-us-russia.html\"><span class=\"s1\">with a post<\/span><\/a>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201c<i>Trump&#8217;s playing the ultimatum game with Russia: 50 days or 10\u2026 He should remember 2 things: 1. Russia isn&#8217;t Israel or even Iran. 2. Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country. Don&#8217;t go down the Sleepy Joe road<\/i>!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Clearly, Medvedev who has a reputation as a Twitter troll was playing with Trump\u2019s own inability to stop the war in a timely manner, although the President chose to interpret Medvedev\u2019s words as \u2018<i>highly provocative<\/i>\u201d and \u201ci<i>nflammatory<\/i>\u201d which caused him to \u2018<i>reposition<\/i>\u2019 two US Navy nuclear submarines to \u201c<i>appropriate regions<\/i>\u201d. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Trump told Medvedev to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/politics\/trump-escalates-nuclear-brinksmanship-with-russia-over-social-media-spat\/ar-AA1JKxPo?ocid=BingNewsSerp\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>watch his words<\/i><\/span><\/a>,\u201d and called him a \u201c<i>failed former President of Russia,<\/i>\u201d and said he was \u201c<i>entering very dangerous territory<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Trump\u2019s habit of escalating that which does not deserve to be escalated is a soft spot indicative of an incongruous thinker with little self assurance who can be easily influenced. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">***<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">At about the same time, US sanctions reared its offensive head as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/senate-bill\/1241\/text?s=1&amp;r=2\"><span class=\"s1\">HR 1241<\/span><\/a>, the Sanctioning Russia Act of 2015; otherwise known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/5432717-senate-russia-bill-adjournment\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Graham-Blumenthal Sanctions Bill<\/span><\/a> was introduced representing two of the most anti MAGA, pro sanction Senators committed to keep the Ukraine war going.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Act made major legislative progress with 84 bipartisan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/senate-bill\/1241\/cosponsors?s=1&amp;r=2\"><span class=\"s1\">co-sponsors. <\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Those co sponsors included<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>forty three Democrats and forty one Republican Senators all of whom endorsed the ill-conceived concept of applying a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blumenthal.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press\/release\/blumenthal-and-grahams-hard-hitting-sanctions-bill-has-over-80-cosponsors\"><span class=\"s1\">500% tariff on imported goods from Russia as well as those nations who buy Russian oil, gas, uranium and other products<\/span><\/a>.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">By the end of July, fifteen Senators from both sides of the aisle were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/trump-keeps-republicans-off-russia-094712464.html\"><span class=\"s1\">withholding support<\/span><\/a> for Graham-Blumenthal including such America First foreign policy advocates as Sen. Mike Lee (Utah), Sen. Ron Johnson (Wisc) and other newbie GOP Freshman. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sen. Rand Paul (Ky) declared a No vote even if Trump endorses the bill citing that \u201c<i>It would be devastating to world trade and probably the most injurious to our economy<\/i>\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Perhaps it may be that some members of the GOP Senate were reacting to President Trump\u2019s earlier criticisms of any member of Congress who disagree with the President\u2019s agenda, none of whom wish to be publicly chastised as others who were critical of the One Big Beautiful Bill or other Trump initiatives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The purpose of 1241 is to:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201c<i>Impose sanctions and other measures with respect to the Russian Federation if the Government of the Russian Federation refuses to negotiate a peace agreement with Ukraine, violates any such agreement, or initiates another military invasion of Ukraine, and for other purposes<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Trump is unable to acknowledge that BRICS has identified coercive US tactics as counter productive and must learn to demonstrate flexibility in its trade and tariff negotiations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to an April 1<span class=\"s2\"><sup>st<\/sup><\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lgraham.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/press-releases?ID=3D495158-CF7D-4833-A2DB-9E5558843F1B\"><span class=\"s1\">press release<\/span><\/a> from Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC), \u201c<i>Companion legislation is being introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by U.S. Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pennsylvania), Mike Quigley (D-Illinois), Joe Wilson (R-South Carolina) and Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio).\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a May 21<span class=\"s2\"><sup>st<\/sup><\/span> press release from Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn) added that<i> \u201cOur legislation will isolate Russia\u00a0\u2013\u00a0putting it on a trade island by imposing stiff tariffs on other countries that support these atrocities. One of the main priorities of our legislation is to hold China accountable for propping up Putin\u2019s war machine by buying cheap Russian oil from the shadow fleet. Without China\u2019s economic support, Putin\u2019s war machine would come to a grinding halt.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Similarly, Mr<i>. <\/i>Blumenthal failed to mention that without US funding and a steady supply of weapons, the Ukraine war machine would come to a grinding halt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Trump has promised to apply \u2018secondary\u2019 sanctions on India and China if Russia does not stop war in Ukraine in ten days\u2026or is it five days. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>While India had been reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/india\/612839-trump-modi-meet-washington-embrace\/\"><span class=\"s1\">identified<\/span><\/a> as having earned a <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/business\/india-business\/india-saved-7-9-billion-by-buying-more-russian-crude-in-fy24\/articleshow\/109736144.cms\"><span class=\"s1\">25% tariff<\/span><\/a> on US imports, its foreign ministry refuted the US claim that New Delhi has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/india\/622403-india-refutes-trumps-claim\/\"><span class=\"s1\">halted its purchase<\/span><\/a> of Russian oil.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Citing that its energy purchases are \u201c<i>based on price, availability and market conditions<\/i>\u201d that prioritize the welfare of India\u2019s 1.4 billion consumers rather than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/india\/621312-partnership-vs-coercion-will-india\/\"><span class=\"s1\">alignment with western sanctions<\/span><\/a>. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Between 2023-2024, India saved <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/business\/india-business\/india-saved-7-9-billion-by-buying-more-russian-crude-in-fy24\/articleshow\/109736144.cms\"><span class=\"s1\">$7.9 billion<\/span><\/a> on oil imports by purchasing Russian crude.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Meanwhile, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller has not only criticized India but accused them of \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/world\/trump-aide-accuses-india-of-financing-russias-war-in-ukraine\/ar-AA1JPUaA?ocid=BingNewsSerp\"><span class=\"s1\">financing\u2019 the Ukraine<\/span><\/a> war by their purchase of Russian crude. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201c<i>What he [Trump] said very clearly is that it is not acceptable for India to continue financing this war by purchasing the oil from Russia<\/i>.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Miller also accused India of \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RT_com\/status\/1952044177111556278?ref_src=twsrc%255Etfw%257Ctwcamp%255Etweetembed%257Ctwterm%255E1952044177111556278%257Ctwgr%255E8b146ab53bd20bb1cd8f5e28368f33310487ebcd%257Ctwcon%255Es1_&amp;ref_url=https:\/\/www.financialexpress.com\/world-news\/trump-said-very-clearly-white-house-dy-chief-of-staff-accuses-india-of-financing-russias-war-during-fox-news-interview\/3935461\/\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>cheating on immigration<\/i><\/span><\/a>\u201d adding that &#8220;<i>People will be shocked to learn that India is basically tied with\u00a0<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/china-should-expect-100-tariffs-for-buying-russian-oil\/\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>China<\/i><\/span><\/a><i>\u00a0in purchasing Russian oil<\/i>,&#8221; he said. &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RT_com\/status\/1952044177111556278?ref_src=twsrc%255Etfw%257Ctwcamp%255Etweetembed%257Ctwterm%255E1952044177111556278%257Ctwgr%255E8b146ab53bd20bb1cd8f5e28368f33310487ebcd%257Ctwcon%255Es1_&amp;ref_url=https:\/\/www.financialexpress.com\/world-news\/trump-said-very-clearly-white-house-dy-chief-of-staff-accuses-india-of-financing-russias-war-during-fox-news-interview\/3935461\/\"><span class=\"s1\">That&#8217;s an astonishing fact<\/span><\/a>.&#8221;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Not such an astonishing fact when it comes to public attention that India has saved billions of dollars in its purchase of Russian oil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Indian Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond while Indian government officials told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india\/top-trump-aide-accuses-india-financing-russias-war-ukraine-2025-08-03\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Reuters<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on Aug. 2 that the country intends to continue buying Russian oil despite U.S. warnings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">India has steadily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.financialexpress.com\/world-news\/trump-said-very-clearly-white-house-dy-chief-of-staff-accuses-india-of-financing-russias-war-during-fox-news-interview\/3935461\/\"><span class=\"s1\">increased its dependence<\/span><\/a> on Russian crude since 2022, now sourcing over a third of its oil imports from Moscow.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>While India is a protectionist state, protecting its small businesses, neither Russia nor India is expected to capitulate to Trump\u2019s tariff\/ sanction policy as a geopolitical weapon against another country.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There can be no future for any government run by tantrum, that is not serving the public interest and will discover the art of winning friends and influencing people as a more constructive path for success.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><i>Renee Parsons<\/i><\/b><i>\u00a0has been an elected public official in Colorado, an environmental lobbyist with Friends of the Earth and a staff member in the US House of Representative in Washington, DC.
