Officials in Texas are casting blame on the National Weather Service (NWS) for failing to forecast catastrophic flooding that has killed 24 people.NWS was among the government agencies targeted by the Trump administration in its effort to gut the federal bureaucracy,\u00a0losing<\/a>\u00a0approximately 600 staffers.After the cuts, the agency\u2014which was already understaffed\u2014began to prepare to offer \u201cdegraded\u201d forecasting services, facing \u201csevere shortages\u201d of meteorologists,\u00a0according<\/a>\u00a0to an internal document obtained by\u00a0The New York Times\u00a0<\/i>in April.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe original forecast that we received Wednesday from the National Weather Service predicted 3-6 inches of rain in the Concho Valley and 4-8 inches in the Hill Country,\u201d\u00a0said<\/a> Texas Emergency Management Chief W. Nim Kidd at a press conference Friday. \u201cThe amount of rain that fell at this specific location was never in any of those forecasts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sudden thunderstorms\u00a0dumped<\/a>\u00a0more than 10 inches of rain on the area, causing heavy flooding from the Guadalupe River.<\/p>\n

Dalton Rice, the city manager for Kerrville, Texas\u2014who also spoke at the press conference\u2014said that the catastrophic flash flooding happened because the skies \u201cdumped more rain than what was forecasted\u201d on two of the river\u2019s forks.<\/p>\n

The flooding\u00a0has killed<\/a>\u00a0at least 27 people so far\u201418 adults and nine children. About 25 young girls from Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp that sits near the river, are still missing.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One Friday, Trump\u00a0called<\/a> the catastrophe \u201cshocking\u201d and \u201cterrible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey don\u2019t know the answer yet as to how many people, but it looks like some young people have died,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Times\u00a0<\/i>reported in June that, just months after the Trump administration had forced out the hundreds of staffers, the National Weather Service was granted a waiver to the administration\u2019s government-wide hiring freeze.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson told the\u00a0Times\u00a0<\/i>that the added staff were intended to \u201cstabilize\u201d the agency.<\/p>\n

The National Weather Service did not immediately return the Daily Beast\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<\/article>\n
