By Sue B<\/em>\u00a0It doesn\u2019t strike people down like pills or heroin does. It doesn\u2019t make the heart explode like cocaine or methamphetamine can. A person in withdrawal from marijuana isn\u2019t screaming in pain. So what makes weed the most dangerous?<\/p>\n

Simply because so many people believe that it is harmless. As\u00a0Richard Adamski, a 30-year marijuana user<\/a>, put it, \u201cIn my strong opinion, cannabis is the most dangerous drug because most people think it isn\u2019t.\u201d Now that he\u2019s stopped consuming cannabis, he says, \u201cI am 66 now and nothing to show for what I\u2019ve done in my life because of marijuana.\u201d<\/p>\n

Selling the Idea It\u2019s Harmless<\/h2>\n

Once a person believes that this drug is harmless,<\/span>\u00a0it becomes incredibly hard to change their mind. This is a phenomenon that pro-legalization advocates count on. They know they only have to convince a population that cannabis products should be able to be provided to those who are ill. As soon as they get that idea accepted, medical marijuana laws go on the ballot. Whether this idea is true or not, when enough people accept it, marijuana quickly becomes legal for medical use. Of course, the regulations for qualifying for\u00a0medical marijuana are hazy and loose in most states<\/a>. It doesn\u2019t matter. The population has accepted the idea that marijuana is not only harmless, it\u2019s\u00a0medicine.

This belief in harmlessness can lead to some misguided thinking. A school administrator in Spokane, Washington told the story of a student who had a bag of marijuana confiscated from her.\u00a0 The student\u2019s mother came to the school and asked for her bag of marijuana back because, after all, it belonged to her and not her daughter. No, she didn\u2019t get her wish.<\/p>\n

Is it a gateway drug?<\/h2>\n

Then there\u2019s the gateway effect.\u00a0 At one time, it was widely believed that tobacco, alcohol and marijuana served as gateways to the use of harder more dangerous and addictive drugs like cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin. So is it true?\u00a0 Are these actually gateway drugs?<\/p>\n

It depends on the delicate balance of your terminology. For example, can it be\u00a0proven<\/em>\u00a0that marijuana use\u00a0causes<\/em>\u00a0a person to go onto use heroin or another deadly drug?\u00a0 No, because so many pot smokers don\u2019t go on to use these other drugs.<\/p>\n

However, is there a clear relationship between starting with marijuana (or tobacco or alcohol or all three) and the use of a more dangerous drug? It\u2019s actually pretty easy to prove this relationship exists.\u00a0 All you have to do is ask a group of people in rehab for heroin, methamphetamine or cocaine addiction. What drugs did they start with?<\/p>\n

Our law enforcement officers have a chance to ask a broad spectrum of drug users about the drugs they started with. In West Virginia, Sheriff Ralph Fletcher refuses\u00a0to stop prosecuting marijuana users<\/a>. He said,\u201dHeroin is our new drug problem..it all starts with marijuana.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Ohio, Sheriff\u2019s Chief Deputy Orvis Campbell\u00a0commented on this gateway effect<\/a>: \u201cThere were countless interviews when you\u2019re speaking or a heroin addict or a meth addict..At that point, most of them regret, as much as anything in their life, trying marijuana.<\/p>\n

The Cartel Connection<\/h2>\n

It can also be argued that the widespread legalization of marijuana in America drove Mexican drug cartels and others to pull out their marijuana crops and plant heroin, bringing us to our current disastrous situation of plentiful heroin supplies and low prices. This relationship was covered in detail in a\u00a02016 Esquire Magazine article<\/a>. That relationship ads another layer of danger to this drug.<\/p>\n

This article could go on for a while, chronicling the dangers of this drug to mind, body and society but you should get the point now. Yes, it\u2019s not a drug that directly causes a lot of death. But don\u2019t ever let yourself think for a moment that it\u2019s harmless.<\/p>\n
