Will Russia’s Retaliation To Ukraine’s Strategic Drone Strikes Decisively End The Conflict?<\/em><\/h1>\n

Ukraine carried out strategic drone strikes on Sunday against several bases all across Russia that are known to house elements of its nuclear triad. This came a day before the second round of the\u00a0newly resumed Russian-Ukrainian talks in Istanbul<\/a>\u00a0and less than a week after\u00a0Trump\u00a0warned<\/a>\u00a0Putin that \u201cbad things..REALLY BAD\u201d might soon happen to Russia<\/strong>. It therefore can\u2019t be ruled out that he knew about this and might have even discreetly signaled his approval in order to \u201cforce Russia into peace\u201d.<\/p>\n

Of course, it\u2019s\u00a0also possible that he was bluffing and the Biden-era CIA helped orchestrate this attack in advance without him ever finding out\u00a0<\/strong>so that Ukraine could either sabotage peace talks if he won and pressured Zelensky into them or coerce maximum concessions from Russia, but his ominous words still look bad. Whatever the extent of Trump\u2019s knowledge may or may not be, Putin might once again\u00a0climb the escalation ladder<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0dropping more Oreshniks<\/a>\u00a0on Ukraine, which could risk a rupture in their ties.<\/p>\n

Seeing as how Trump is being left in the dark about the conflict by his closest advisors (not counting Witkoff) as proven by him\u00a0misportraying<\/a>\u00a0Russia\u2019s retaliatory strikes against Ukraine over the past week as unprovoked, he might react the same way to Russia\u2019s inevitable retaliation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

His ally Lindsay Graham\u00a0already prepared legislation<\/a>\u00a0for imposing 500% tariffs on all Russian energy clients, which Trump might approve in response, and this could pair with ramping up armed aid to Ukraine in a major escalation.<\/p>\n

Everything therefore depends on the form of Russia\u2019s retaliation; the US\u2019 response; and \u2013 if they\u2019re not canceled as a result \u2013 the outcome of tomorrow\u2019s talks in Istanbul.\u00a0If the first two phases of this scenario sequence don\u2019t spiral out of control, then it\u2019ll all depend on whether Ukraine makes concessions to Russia after its retaliation;<\/strong>\u00a0Russia makes concessions to Ukraine after the US\u2019 response to Russia\u2019s retaliation; or their talks are once again inconclusive.<\/p>\n

The first is by far the best outcome for Russia.<\/p>\n

The second would suggest that Ukraine\u2019s strategic drone strikes on Russia\u2019s nuclear triad and the US\u2019 response to its retaliation pressured Putin to compromise on his stated goals.<\/strong><\/p>\n

These are Ukraine\u2019s withdrawal from the entirety of the disputed regions, its demilitarization, denazification, and restoring its constitutional neutrality.\u00a0Freezing the Line of Contact<\/a>\u00a0(LOC), even perhaps in exchange for some US sanctions relief and a\u00a0resource-centric<\/a>\u00a0strategic<\/a>\u00a0partnership<\/a>\u00a0with it, could cede Russia\u2019s strategic edge.<\/p>\n

Not only might Ukraine rearm and reposition ahead of reinitiating hostilities on comparatively better terms, but uniformed Western troops might also\u00a0flood into Ukraine<\/a>, where they could then function as tripwires for manipulating Trump into \u201cescalating to de-escalate\u201d if they\u2019re attacked by Russia. As for the third possibility, inconclusive talks, Trump might soon lose patience with Russia and thus \u201cescalate to de-escalate\u201d anyhow. He could always\u00a0just walk away<\/a>, however, but his recent posts suggest that he won\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Overall, Ukraine\u2019s unprecedented provocation will escalate the conflict, but it\u2019s unclear what will follow Russia\u2019s inevitable retaliation. Russia will either coerce the concessions from Ukraine that Putin demands for peace; the US\u2019 response to its retaliation will coerce concessions from Russia to Ukraine instead; or both will remain manageable and tomorrow\u2019s talks will be inconclusive, thus likely only delaying the US\u2019 seemingly inevitable escalated involvement.\u00a0Tonight will therefore be fateful for the conflict\u2019s future.<\/strong><\/p>\n
