Ron DeSantis\u2019 signature.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--text-alignment ad-container boxinlineAd dn-print\" data-testid=\"ad__container\">\n<div data-mps=\"true\" data-slot=\"boxinline\" data-sizes=\"[[[1000,1],[]],[[758,1],[[300,250],[700,50],[5,5],[728,90],[360,360]]],[[0,0],[[300,250],[700,50],[5,5],[360,360]]]]\" data-render-on-view=\"true\" data-targeting=\"{}\" data-active-tab=\"true\" data-offset-viewport=\"100\" data-testid=\"ad__container__inner\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"taboolaReadMoreBelow\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">If DeSantis, a Republican, signs the bill, Florida will become the second state to ban fluoride from water supplies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, also a Republican,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/utah-bans-fluoride-public-water-rcna193917\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed a bill in late March<\/a>\u00a0that prohibits any person or government entity from\u00a0adding the cavity-fighting mineral to the state\u2019s water systems, making it the first state to do so. Opponents argued that everyday Floridians rely on fluoride for dental health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;This bill doesn\u2019t hurt the wealthy. They\u2019ll keep seeing private dentists, getting their expensive treatments and flashing their perfect smiles,&#8221; Democratic Rep. Daryl Campbell said during the session. &#8220;But for everyday Floridians, the people who clock in at 6 a.m., who can\u2019t take time off \u2014\u00a0off for their dental visits, who rely on water from their taps to protect their kids, this bill takes a safe and proven and affordable public health tool and rips it away.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--text-alignment ad-container boxinlineAd dn-print\" data-testid=\"ad__container\">\n<div data-mps=\"true\" data-slot=\"boxinline\" data-sizes=\"[[[1000,1],[]],[[758,1],[[300,250],[700,50],[5,5],[728,90],[360,360]]],[[0,0],[[300,250],[700,50],[5,5],[360,360]]]]\" data-render-on-view=\"true\" data-targeting=\"{}\" data-active-tab=\"true\" data-offset-viewport=\"100\" data-testid=\"ad__container__inner\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, a Democrat, said in a statement that she was &#8220;deeply disappointed&#8221; by the Legislature&#8217;s decision to ban fluoride, which she said &#8220;disregards the overwhelming consensus of dentists, doctors, and medical experts and will end a practice that has been in place for decades to protect our health.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"recommended-intersection-ref\" data-activity-map=\"recommended-article-body-recommended\" data-testid=\"recommended-wrapper\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;No studies have shown that fluoridation at low levels is unsafe for our communities, including babies and pregnant women \u2014 in fact, it is vitally important for the health of developing teeth in infants and children,&#8221; Cava said, adding that such decisions should be left to local communities. &#8220;Ending fluoridation will have long-lasting health consequences, especially for our most vulnerable families.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"recommended-intersection-ref\" data-activity-map=\"recommended-article-body-recommended\" data-testid=\"recommended-wrapper\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"body-graf\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/fluoride-safe-drinking-water-cities-ban-rcna143605\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Major public health groups<\/a>, including the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aap.org\/en\/patient-care\/oral-health\/fluoridation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Academy of Pediatrics<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.org\/resources\/community-initiatives\/fluoride-in-water\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Dental Association<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/preview\/mmwrhtml\/00056796.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 which says drinking fluoridated water keeps teeth strong and reduces cavities \u2014 support adding fluoride to water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">The anti-fluoridation movement seems to be gaining popularity, especially as Robert F.
